Something I didn’t mention earlier was how oppressive this humidity was tonight. Many people kick and sweat, especially after the march portion.

“I think about my mom…during [Midway Blitz], she told me she believed the American Dream wasn’t for us. After 40 years in this country, she said ‘this isn’t for us...’”

They aren’t the only ones memorialized, of course. Various signs are dedicated to the ever-growing list of the dead. “Lorenzo, Johan, and so many others…” has been repeated by speech-makers as the exasperated shorthand.

In Chicago’s Little Village, locals are currently holding an evening rally and vigil for Lorenzo Salgado Araujo and Johan Sebastián Durán Guerrero, two fathers killed by ICE just six days away from each other.

Happy 4th of July from the ICE facility in Broadview, IL, where ~2 hrs ago a Fed fired pepper balls from inside his blacked out SUV, striking an older protester in the torso. Others rendered aid, quickly wiping the irritants off them and getting them a fresh shirt before taking them to the hospital.

Since the local police left, things have calmed down. Protesters are now switching to jail support at Maywood and Broadview police stations, which they were only told after yelling for that info for the past 15 minutes.

While cops were busy surrounding a bicyclist, protesters knocked over the string of barricades. Police moved down the line to set them back up.

Local police have arrested one person (the first I’ve seen today) on a bicycle who was riding past the ICE facility. Protesters 100 feet away in the “free speech zone” shout obscenities, and try to get their name.

CCSO on Harvard, BPD on 25th, but in relatively low numbers—for now—compared to other protests.

About 30 protesters are now occupying 25th and Harvard St. An ICE van, potentially attempting to enter the facility via this way, drives off.

Protesters have moved out of the intersection and have begun marching east on Lexington. There is no “designated protest zone” beyond what is on Beach Street. Throughout earlier in the year, marches in this direction have usually resulted in arrest.

Protester to local law, which includes black officers: “You should be ashamed of yourselves. They don’t respect you, they’re racist!”

Cop on bullhorn: “Get out of the street or you will be arrested.” Protesters tell them to “shut the fuck up.”

The local law enforcement here is known as the “Unified Command,” a combination of local Broadview police, Cook County Sheriff, and Illinois State Police. They also operate at least five solar-powered security camera towers surrounding the protest area.

10 minutes ago, protesters began speeches while occupying Beach St and Lexington St local police rolled up in cars and are verbally ordering them to vacate.

The Village of Broadview has maintained a “designated protest area” since Fall 2025. It has gone through many configurations, but for the last few weeks, it has run parallel with Beach Street, allowing ICE vehicles to go through.

As ~50 protesters begin speeches, mutual aid tables are erected, handing out PPE, water, snacks, bells, whistles, medical supplies, and other protest supplies upon request. This is a weekly occurrence.
