Made it up to the top of Southwick Hill for the sunset, before the week ends. It’s, fortunately, been a holiday of restoration and the tidying up of a few loose ends. And now the summer beckons - it’s going to be a full one. Bring it on.
Tonight, on Nighthawks at the African Diner, John and I spent a couple of hours with some contemporary music from around the Congo region. Expect multiple afro genres and plenty of great music. Finally completed a book I’ve been looking to read for several years, de Sousa Santos’s ‘From the Pandemic to Utopia’. Though a pretty dense read, it has helped to extend my thinking around what I have been calling #transitionism (essentially, pathways towards better futures). Will revisit this.
Tonight on The Thursday Night Show, the Nighthawks get on a journey down river as the African Diner takes in music from around the River Congo. This time for 2 hours, join Dom and John at the virtual diner counter on March 5, from 22:00 (UK time) for samples of Congo music. ttns.uk
A gentleman I spotted at work servicing ‘Starbot’, our robot barista vending machine.
Have just completed David Byrne’s marvellous ‘How Music Works’, which was mostly hard to put down. In some part, you get the story of Talking Heads, but in other parts, you get how architecture influences how music is made or an insider’s view on the music industry. Highly recommended. #AmReading
Last October, we put on a full 48hrs of radio programming as part of the annual #ALTc conference in Glasgow, exploring what learning technology sounded like. This Jan & Feb, we’re broadcasting programme highlights again on TTNS every Friday PM. #ALTCRadio #Rewind docs.google.com/spreadsheets...

Tomorrow, back to work after two weeks off that were both restful and productive. And I go into the new working year with probably (as far as my records can tell) my first #InboxZero in about five years! Won’t last long, but nothing like a blank state to start back up from.
For any of you still up (or in a different time zone to mine), I’ll be doing a radio show on Christmas Day itself. 23:00 UK time. The theme is ‘This Day In Music’, so although there’ll be some festive music, it’s not all that. Drop by for the curios, stay for the chatroom. ttns.uk

Just finished this fabulous book, ‘Designing Hope’ by @sarahhousley.bsky.social, looking through the lenses of four emerging futures. Read it in just a few days - it felt like a neat summary of many of the things I’ve been reading over the past few years in the search for ways out of the polycrisis.

Took the #drone out today and got 20m of flight time, capturing the sun setting over the South Downs. Beginning to develop more confidence in my abilities to navigate and fly the thing by now, its 5th proper flight. It’s interesting how much our countryside becomes ‘managed farmland’ from up there.
