Mail call 2: Bouncing round Discogs, and we have a Galliano remix album (primarily for the Weatherall remix), a mod soul comp (for an Impressions track), a Beat best of, and Milk And Kisses by the Cocteau Twins, which seems oddly difficult to get hold of.
Mail call: Two @raynewman.bsky.social books: Thin Places In Hard Concrete and Intervals Of Darkness. Signed, no less. Am really enjoying Ray’s other short story collection, Municipal Gothic, so this was a no-brainer.
Today. Came up with the idea for a story for Zarjaz on the dog walk, did a bit more hopping in the gym, and started the festivities for this one’s fourth birthday. Good start.
Well, this is absolutely a good time. CONAN by Busiek and Nord - loads of fun, and completely nailing what it is to be good Conan comics.
Just been to see Backrooms. Or Potteries Centre Service Corridor. And the whole “liminal/weird/kinda wrong” thing? Yeah, definitely Potteries Centre Service Corridor Photo evidence of original signage.
Related: I’d recommend Magic Realms: The Art Of Fighting Fantasy. It’s a lovely art book with art by all of the FF artists, especially those early titans like Blanche, McCaig, Nicholson, Miller etc. (And one of my favourites, Bob Harvey)
Blanche illustrated all four of Steve Jackson’s “Sorcery” books - just amazing, weird, beautiful and strange pen and ink drawings unlike anything I’d seen before. Amazing creatures conjured up from Jackson’s text descriptions. Magic.
Two top-notch books I had missed, as recommended on a thread on here. (Wish I could remember from where, but thanks!) HIGHEST HOUSE - Carey and Gross. First rate coming of age fantasy stuff, as good as you’d hope. HERETIC - Morrison and Adlard. Black, horrific historical tale, beautifully told
Nothing like seeing art to a story for the first time to give you a real pick-me-up. New Dreddverse story for ZARJAZ coming soon, as an old megger comes back to the city. Fantastic art by Oliver Harud.
Amused by this from Popbitch. David Gest rang me up once to discuss a similar sale of Michael Jackson memoribilia. I pointed out that the company I worked for was of the “we’ll give you something like 50p a disc” variety and maybe he should try a more specialist route. “Like Sotheby’s maybe?”
