🐠 reunion #mermay

They are both lying entangled in a tiny, messy boat, Rasha wrapping his long tail around his person. They kiss each other longingly. Seagulls fly above them.

continuation of a mermay AU i wrote from 3 years ago (time flies what the fjck)
i thought i wouldnt do anything for mermay this year but randomly got super hyped after playing subnautica 2 a lot.... woopsie!!!!!!!! GAY FISH

SO.
tldr: mu was a boat mechanic who washed ashore on a strange island. he meets rasha, a feral mermaid, after he gets stuck in his fishing hook. rasha is then unable to hunt because of the injuries to his mouth, (hes pretty bad at hunting overall tho) and has to rely on mu feeding him - diving for boat scraps in exchange so mu can fix a boat and return home.
as they interact, they get close, learn about each other's lives. rasha used to be in human captivity, hence the injuries and him knowing english. and mu, like in canon, has a family that relies on him immensely - economically and emotionally.
eventually mu fixes up a boat called 'solid gold', and leaves the island behind with a lump in his throat.

even after its been years, he can't get their time together out of his head.

he collects various newspaper articles, sketches rasha's appearance to remember what to look for, catches fish and cooks them the way he remembers he likes. visits many, many locations of reported sightings...
so many days, weeks, months, YEARS... (3 years, even HÖH) no results!
but then... on the verge of giving up, the sloop suddenly starts rocking. what is this? is it a current? an animal? no... something grabs onto the barnacle-infested railing, and catapults itself onto the boat. maybe mu wasn't the only one looking.
water covers the bottom of the boat, papers go flyin everywhere. mu's hat bucket hat flew off to somewhere and a fish is flapping around just nearby, gee what a mess- but it doesn't matter.
