The Eyes Are the Best Part by Monika Kim was one of the best debut novels I’ve ever read and had been my favorite book I read this year so far. I just finished Molka, her second book, and it was even better. She has instantly shot up to top of the TBR pile when whatever she does next comes out.

#Junesploitation Day 30: ‘80s Comedy! cc @fthismovie.bsky.social Thanks for another awesome year of Junesploiting, all!

My expectations were low (at best) and boy did this movie deliver. This was clearly inspired by the success of Police Academy, but lacks the imagination or humor to be as good as even Police Academy 5.

An oversexed college student transfers to the only school that will take him, Busterburger University, a spoof of the actual McDonald’s Hamburger University that trained managers and franchise owners at the time. There are sporadic chuckles amid the hijinx, but it’s all pretty forgettable.

That being said, this has been a pretty great Junesploitation overall and I’ve made some discoveries I’ve really loved. Thanks to all who participated and read along!

I chose this because I know it was a major influence on Martin Scorsese and man, he ain’t kidding. This is a masterpiece. Robert Ryan is excellent in the lead as Stoker Thompson, a past-his-prime pugilist aching for one last win. He takes a fight with a younger hotshot (Hal Baylor) without realizing that his manager has been taking bribes from a gangster. The manager expects the aging fighter to lose anyway so he never tells him about the bribes. Little does he know how determined Stoker is to win.

The story is told in real time, and the boxing sequences are as tense as can be. I started feeling a little dizzy watching them and realized that it was because I was holding my breath from the tension. This is an incredible movie, the kind that has me still buzzing from it an hour later. This is the dragon I’m chasing every time I watch a noir movie, I cannot give it a higher recommendation.

Holy shit, this movie. While I can’t call it good, exactly, I loved every second of it just the same. C. Thomas Howell, with poofy hair and an ink-black goatee that combine to make him look like an overgrown Peter Dinklage, is a troubled cop recruited by Ed Lauter (because of course it’s Ed Lauter) into an Extreme Justice-style group of vigilante cops.

You’ve seen it all before story-wise, but the draw here is the absolutely bonkers stunt work. People are plowed over, set on fire, and dropped from high places with astonishing frequency. Jeff Fahey’s (curly-haired?) stunt double clings to a car flying off a pier into the water in glorious slow motion within the first 10 minutes and the action rarely lets up from there. Also you know Howell is a tough guy because he wears a House of Pain ballcap for 90% of his screen time. This was so much fun I already want to watch it again.

#Junesploitation Day 27: Italian Cinema! cc @fthismovie.bsky.social

In his younger years, Dario Argento was an absolute master with a roster of unassailable classics like Tenebrae, Deep Red, Suspiria, and The Bird With the Crystal Plumage (my personal favorite Giallo). Later in his career he began to falter until he reached his nadir with the execrable Dracula 3D, a movie so bad that it seemingly stopped his career in its tracks. A full decade later he got back behind the camera, and here is the result.

While it’s nowhere near as bad as Dracula 3D, it’s certainly not without problems. Diana (Ilenia Pastorelli) is a woman blinded in an accident, navigating her new life while also caring for the child of a couple killed in that same accident. The two of them (and her heroic guide dog) are faced with a murderous stalker and have to count on each other to survive. There’s a level of cruelty to the violence that is severely off-putting, and the performances are pretty flat. Unfortunately the suspense and visual style that Argento built his career on just isn’t evident here. Too bad.

#Junesploitation Day 26: Heroes and Villains! cc @fthismovie.bsky.social I went a little long again but good lord I loved this movie

This felt like the perfect fit for heroes and villains day considering Yuri Boyka’s (Scott Adkins) history. He was introduced as the villain of Undisputed II, where despite being the world’s most complete fighter (his words) he had his ass (and knee) handed to him by George “Iceman” Chambers (Michael Jai White) in an underground prison mixed martial arts tournament. Boyka returned as the hero of Undisputed III, broken but determined, and the series managed to get better with every installment.

Now here we are at the fourth entry and you know what? It still keeps getting better. Boyka is back, this time trying to atone for not only the life that put him in prison, but also for the accidental death of an opponent in the ring. This is Adkins’ best performance as Boyka, bringing the power emotionally as well as physically, and he’s matched every step of the way by Teodora Duhovnikova as Alma, the wife of the man he killed. The fights are dynamic and exciting and shot in a way that makes you feel like you’re in the ring with these incredible fighters. I hope this isn’t the last one, but if it is it’s an excellent capstone to an improbably great franchise.

#Junesploitation Day 25: Jackie Chan! cc @fthismovie.bsky.social

Jackie Chan is partnered with a streetwise cop to go from New York to Hong Kong on the trail of a kidnap victim. No, it’s not a Rush Hour sequel, it’s an early attempt to get Jackie to break out in the states. It didn’t work, and that’s probably for the best.

There’s some cool action here, but nothing as inventive as Jackie’s best. It’s weird hearing Jackie curse and seeing him use guns to do most of the crime fighting, but that’s an ‘80s cop movie for you. Good stuff: an awesome chase that has him jumping from boat to boat in a busy harbor, Danny Aiello as his partner, and a handful of deeply satisfying squibs. Less good stuff: pretty much everything else. His actual US breakout hit, Rumble in the Bronx, is also not great but it’s way more fun and lets him show off his unique personality rather than try to just stuff him into the generic cop movie box like this one does.

Same old story, a group of rowdy teenagers go camping in the woods, the woods are haunted by the ancient spirit of a Viking (who clearly had access to a Nautilus machine and possibly a Stairmaster) decked out in a bear pelt. Also possibly an actual bear. Either way, lots of clawing ensues.

The kids aren’t too over-the-top obnoxious, and George “Buck” Flower (now there’s a dude who needs his own Junesploitation day!) shows up as a guy named Pappy so it’s definitely watchable. The killings are all pretty same-y (with terrible stage blood straight from the Smuckers factory), but there’s a scuffle with a real bear that’s pretty thrilling, assuming nobody actually got mauled shooting it. Fun stuff!
