I love jasmine plants sometimes because even though you can barely underwater them and they might decide to up and die, you can also abuse them a fair bit: rip out their roots and cut them way back and they're like "yeah, I'll grow back and flower. No problem".
I'm trying a new coping mechanism where whenever my job upsets me or I get frustrated, I go to go to the gym and lift weights. The way things are going, I fully expect to look like this in about a year #science

Plein air watercolor kit is a success! It's fun to see the differences between the reference/outdoors spot and the painting.

I feel like I should explain more. TIL Pakistan has a culture of elaborately decorating their transport trucks, called Jingle Trucks. I looked up some images after I received this as a gift and she explained it to me and they are really artistically beautiful and incredible looking vehicles. E.g.,
Grad student returned from a visit home and gifted me this truck. A perfect home for the frog.

Happy to have attended the Fighting Blindness Canada Inherited Retinal Degeneration (IRD) Coffee Chat. Here, we engaged with patients with IRD, and I got to connect with them and speak about the basic science research processes, and what types of basic science are exciting for this field 🧪👀

Checked a bucket list item off today! I've always wanted to swim in the pirate ship pool at the West Edmonton Mall and today I did it. There are all sprts of cool things down there to see, including a wreck of the old submarines from the 80s-90s. 🤿
In today's episode of we accidentally broke biology, an eye in one of our tadpoles grew inverted, normally the blue/yellow bits point outwards/downwards. It was just one eye in a cohort, so its most likely just a random occurrence, but it will be neat to see if we can replicate it. 🧪🐸
Looking through old photos and found this beauty. Frog rods, labelled with GFP under a XOP promoter (inner segment, orange) and wheat germ agglutinin (outer segments, cyan). I love how you can see the holes where the mitochondria are packed near the top of the inner segment (the ellipsoid zone). 🧪🐸
I made this to demonstrate that for data visualization it's not only the color scheme, but the colors chosen for each channel, that matter. Here is the same image of rods and cones represented in RGB and simulated color blindness, showing how small changes can make a huge difference in what you see.
