In 1742 workers in Royston, Hertfordshire accidentally discovered a chalk cave which had been hidden since medieval times. The walls were covered in carvings and etchings. It could be a monks cell or a base for Knights Templar.

In a county with around 300 castles, this one is my least favourite: Starlight Castle. Almost nothing there now, hidden among thorns in a tiny wood. Had a lovely walk all the same.

There’s a theory that cave paintings such as a Lascaux May show animals with many legs because the intention was that the image would flicker in the flames, appearing to be animated. I love idea of creating immersive cinema experience in the dark 22,000 years ago #wyrdWednesday @weirdwednesday

Northumberland is dotted with shrines to various Roman gods, especially along the mighty windswept Hadrian’s Wall. Probably the best preserved is the temple dedicated to the cult of Mithras. Half of it is still there, out on the moors. @mythologymonday #mythologyMonday
