The books contained all the knowledge he needed. The university had large colleges of engineering and architecture with multiple majors within them. There had also been a long standing—and well-funded—department of anthropology. They’d still been studying and digging up what was left at Spiro at the time of Mars disaster. Native American Studies had many language teachers. The Western History Collection and Sam Noble held endless recordings and transcripts of Native elders dating back to before statehood. Esa didn’t take credit for the changes that made the library the only self-sustaining, fully-functioning, air conditioned, heated, and luminated cluster of connected buildings in what was remained of what was once the center of the US and the only safe location for a school in all of New Mississippia, New Aztlan, and Indian Territory, IT for short. Any #shrewd, educated person who was committed to the survival of their Peoples would have done the same with the to which resources he had access. Most of all, the project of remodeling had given the people a vision of hope on the #horizon, a belief in a future.

The gardens grew. So did their community. The folks who had survived, who had stayed, tended to #cling to their houses at first. They came to the Temple when they began canvassing what was left of the town, #sniffing out food. They followed the birds and the bees and small animals to the gardens. Most of them already knew either Esa, Meo, or both. The Native community had always been large—about 4% compared to 3% nationally, but over 13% if you counted mixed-bloods—but they had also always been tight. Soon, they had a whole crew of people working under Esa’s guidance to remodel the library complex.

The massive complex of buildings was brick and stone, the exterior doors riot-proofed during the protests. Things calmed quickly after the mass exodus of non-Natives post Mars mission. The first thing he and Meona’hane’e had done outside of the library was plant the #gardens with seeds they found in the botany building. The old flower beds were super fertile from a century of fertilized garden flower cultivation. He remembered Meona’hane’e’s #heartbreak when heirloom Cherokee tooth corn failed and she’d had to replant with hybridized Supersweet. The chemicals in the soil were too much for Indigenous strains bred for organic, traditional farming as practiced by Native women.

Meona’hane’e concentrated on her feet, #toiling hard in her dream to make them move. Something was tickling her face. It was irritating her. Her right hand made a sudden swing, jerking her awake. It was Oeshkeso! Oh my gosh! She hated to #admit it to even herself, but in her rush to escape Marvin, she had forgotten her little dog!
The canoe had beached itself on a sand covered ledge connected to another passage through the cavern. That little black dog was still protecting her, still guiding her even though she had failed him & left him behind. She shook her head at herself, gathering him into her arms & hugging him tightly, showering him with praise.

“In there.” The man nodded at a door. Ang walked over & knocked on it. The old lady from yesterday opened what appeared to be not so much a room as it was a #carrier of barely controlled pink #chaos—velvet draperies over fake windows, rack after rack of clothing, endless bottles & containers of creams, powders, rouges, lipsticks, eye shadows, perfumes, & things Ang couldn’t identify. Rose was standing on a chair with another woman sewing up the hem of her dress. “Ang!” Rose exclaimed, hopping down & embracing her in a hug.

The man got into a small, motorized cart. “#Relax,” he said. “Get in. No one is going to hurt you.” They headed toward the Big House, #braking once for a 6-legged dog.
The animals here were different.
A flash of red landed in a tree. The cardinal turned, its opposite side a light brown. Mutation? Ang decided it was a sign of good luck.

Tuska was frustrated by the rate of speed they were going, despite his injury. Adario ignored his complaining, #unfazed.
“Stop!” Dawn yelled suddenly.
Braking, Adario turned to face the backseat. “What’s wrong?” he asked.
“This is all out of #balance,” Dawn said. “Do you know how to open the storage compartment?”
“Why?” Adario questioned her, pushing a button that popped open the trunk.
“Just hold on,” Dawn replied, exiting the vehicle. Dawn rapidly removed the books from the horse, putting them in the back of the We-Go, patting the top of the car to signal Adario to close it, & hopping on the horse. “I’ll ride ahead & take point. Y’all can go as fast as you are comfortable driving that thing, as long as you don’t pass me up.” She grabbed the reins, hopped on, gave Old Polka Dots a gentle nudge with her feet & took off at a trot.

Finding the car when they did was #divine providence, Dawn thought. She could have #sprinted all the way to IT as in love as she was with Sonoria, but Tuska & Sonoria were both healing. Tuska’s wound wasn’t looking good. The meth fiend’s bite started an infection. Adario wasn’t used to physical strain. And the horse was keeping up just fine with the lead rope tied to the doorframe.

As if she needed an #extra problem, Esa suddenly came into her mind. He had always had great #magnetism as a leader, much less personally. She blushed. No matter what an ass Marvin was, she had to get Esa & the other Temple Elders to the mountain. He could lead them to fix so much of what was broken by previous generations.

Was the mountain #revealing itself as the giant mother bear she was? Meona’hane’e had heard stories, that Mother Earth’s heart was here, revealed in the rich red veins that ran through her, that the Rockies were her backbone, the Amazon her lungs, the Great Barrier Reef off of Australia, her liver.
If a #quarter of what she had been told were true, maybe this was spinal fluid she was Olympic-style canoe-luging through now.

A tiny, shriveled woman entered the room carrying a huge pink, ruffled dress. “My Lady wants an #appraisal of your dress, Miss Angela,” she said, eyes down & curtsying deeply.

Ang had no idea what to do with herself. Would Moira come back today? In the morning? Ever? Her #apprehension increased exponentially as time passed.
She heard steps, then the lock sliding back.
The man who had accompanied Moira to the highway by Wanda’s Wawa to intercept her entered the room & placed a tray of food on the table before leaving without a word.
She waited for the sound of his steps on the stairs beyond to fade, then proceeded to enthusiastically #scarf down chicken & dumplings, collards, and cornbread she would have sworn Gramma cooked, all washed down with cold glass of sweet tea on ice.
Maybe there was something to be said for Moira’s memory bank after all.

Ang had never been much of a fabulist, but she was gonna have to be one heck of an actress to pull this off. Prevaricating & disassembling it was, then, even if it wouldn’t hold #water with anyone who knew her well at all, heck with anyone who was actually human even, but it would fool this animated #carrion.

Adario cut her off. “It’s okay,” he said. “Get in. I know what to do.”
Tuska opened both doors on the side of car nearest them.
Dawn touched Sonoria’s arm & gently guided her into the backseat as Tuska joined Adario in the front & Adario restarted the engine with the flair of an hero in the grand #finale of a late 20th century action film.

Without warning, Tuska picked up & threw a huge rock from the ones that formed the border of the lot at the car, breaking a side window. The car #lurched to a stop, loud, high-pitched sounds streaming from it into the surrounding forest.
Swiftly, Adario reached inside the car, opening the door, entering, and pushing a button that silenced the machine completely, apparently killing the thing.
They all let out a sigh of relief, but Dawn was anxious, hoping the #penalty for Tuska’s impulsivity weren’t too stiff for them all. There was no telling who had heard all of that commotion.

“It would be super cool if that thing were at all useful,” Sonoria said.

“The hell with books,” replied Sonoria. “I wish it would haul ME!” she laughed.

Tuska had been changed by the attack. He even left behind a #batch of moonshine he had buried in the cave when he was stationed there. Adario, wearing a sharp, long-tailed, red wool #jacket the Tubbees had given him for his valor, along with a turkey wing fan. Sonoria was walking well, though Dawn was worried about her & would have insisted she ride the horse if the poor thing weren’t carrying so many books.
Dawn wanted to ask Adario about the book they had brought them, but thought that perhaps it would be inappropriate to ask.
There was a strange sound in the distance.
The group spread out silently at Tuska’s signal, making their way through the trees toward an old parking lot full of weeds.
They stood astonished as solar-powered We-Go #puttered by. None of them had ever seen an operational automobile.

Dawn, after applying some salve Atsila had sent along with them made from Heartleaf Arnica & wrapping Sonoria’s chest tightly with a cotton bandage, said, finishing, “I might not have a #gift for doctoring, but this is the Dawn of new #era, so who knows what I can accomplish now?”
Sonoria looked up, “Have I told you that you’re the cheesiest person I’ve ever met & that I love you for it yet this morning?”
They both laughed. “I believe you did,” Dawn said, giving Sonoria a peck on the cheek & helping her to her feet.

This #project was important. Los Aztēcahs were no more #distant from their historical greatness than their Mississippian relatives, but the continued colonial occupation of Mexico was a hindrance. Paz was right about the revolution being more of a revelation about WHO THEY ACTUALLY ARE as a people, but capitalism was seductive, & descolonización on a deeper scale still needed to take place, sanación para las almas y los corazones de su gente, La Raza.
