This is from a meadow near Flagstaff. A full 180-degree panorama. Sunset Crater on the far left and the San Francisco Peaks on the far right.

I’ve been messing around with a site that turns video or stills into panoramic photos and I’m very pleased with the results so far. Here’s one from my visit to the Grand Canyon last month.

I went to Manitowoc, Wisconsin, last year and it was quite smoky, but that was nothing compared to what it’s like right now. Looking at the marina webcam you can barely see the buildings on the other side the harbor.

Takashi Miike’s Black Society Trilogy - very interesting collection of grimy, uncompromising noir-esque meditations on outsiders. My favorite of the three was Rainy Dog.

At this point I’m just killing time until Europa Clipper makes it into orbit. 2030 can’t come fast enough.

One major stop today: Meteor Crater Natural Landmark east of Flagstaff. A very impressive feature. Took the guided tour along part of the rim and met another lizard. Also briefly stopped at a volcano trail west of Albuquerque but it was 96 degrees so I noped out of there. #photography #astronomy

Today it was time to start for home, and let me tell you I-40 between Flagstaff and Albuquerque sucks! So much traffic. So many trucks all trying to play musical chairs. I survived, and I don't want to do that again any time soon. #photography #roadtrip

Last night I went up to the Lowell Observatory, which is on a hill above Flagstaff. Founded by Percival Lowell, who was obsessed with the "canals" on Mars, it was where Clyde Tombaugh first identified Pluto in 1930. #photography #astronomy

After that I drove about a half-hour west on I-40 to Williams and went to the Bearizona Wildlife Park. Lots of cool animals, many of which were sleeping in the midday heat (smart critters). Best ones were the wolves, that had to sniff every car before letting them past. #photography #wildlife

Today's first stop was the Riordan Mansion in Flagstaff. This Arts and Crafts-style home was built by two brothers who made it big in the logging industry in the late 1800s. After several generations the family gave it to the state to be a historic park. #photography #history

Last night I went back to Sunset Crater, which is an International Dark Sky Park. Brought my telescope and captured this photo of the Milky Way over the volcano field. #astrophotography

Just to the north of Sunset Crater is Wupatki National Monument, which has some amazing Native American ruins. #photography

These are the San Francisco Peaks, just north of Flagstaff. They used to be a stratovolcano that would have been the tallest mountain in the lower 48 states until it exploded or eroded (theories vary) hundreds of thousands of years ago. #photography #geology #volcanoes

Today's main attraction was Sunset Crater National Monument. Sunset Crater is the youngest cinder cone among a vast field of volcanoes in northern AZ. It erupted less than 1,000 years ago. The park has great trails through the lava fields and lots of overlooks. #photography #geology #volcanoes

Came across this lizard sunning itself on a petrified log and not at all perturbed by me and several other people looking at it. #photography #reptiles #lizard

Stop No. 2 was the Petrified Forest and Painted Desert in Arizona 28 mile drive through neat-looking badlands areas with pullouts and places where you can get up close to the petrified trees. They date back to the late Triassic Period. #photography #geology #paleontology

Stop No. 1 for today was the Bandera Crater and Ice Cave in New Mexico. There's a short hike that leads to a spot partway up the volcano crater, then another part of the trail leads into a partially collapsed lava tube that keeps a deep pool of water perpetually frozen. #photography #geology

Day 2: Santa Fe to Flagstaff, my destination for this trip. Long day. After skirting Albuquerque I got off the interstate and into the boonies. And I mean REALLY into the boonies. The American southwest has endless miles of desolate scrub desert and patches of pine forest. #photography #roadtrip
