It calls to mind that notorious quotation from General Lavr Kornilov, one of the leaders of the White Armies in the Russian Civil War: 'We must save Russia, even if we have to set fire to it, and shed the blood of three-quarters of all Russians.' (The White Armies lost the war, BTW)
