Oh there it is! You want to make sweeping generalizations about the bigotry of Black people. And you’re using my skyline to do it. Nope. But goodness, this is what happens when folks misread identity politics and Black feminism.

I agree with @bakerdphd.bsky.social -this article does an excellent job reminding us how university governance is hostile to the people that the university serves & who the university employees

I think it was actually a perfect illustration of the state of American higher education.

How so? Surely college presidents aren’t constantly plowing into groups of students with their Audis!

Because of who’s in charge. You’ve read a million pearl-clutching op-eds about woke professors and cancel culture, but for my money, the real crisis facing American higher education is that colleges and universities are increasingly run by people who are hostile to students and professors, and who are frequently hostile to the idea of the university itself.

For much of the 20th century, institutions of higher learning in the U.S. operated under a model of shared governance. Students and staff had means of influencing the direction of university policy, faculty had broad power over day-to-day operations, and boards of trustees acted under advisement from both groups. In the 1970s, however, after postwar investment in higher education started dwindling, trustees moved to take almost all the practical power for themselves. The result is that the people who perform the activities you probably think of when you think of college—teaching, studying, writing books, playing intramural volleyball, eating 2 a.m. Cheetos in the library—exert little influence over what the institution does.

And the people who do exert influence often have little to do with the life of the institution itself. They don’t work or study there; they just call the shots. And you know how sophisticated sports analysts love to say, “The commissioner doesn’t work for the fans, he works for the owners”? Well, college presidents, deans, and administrators don’t work for students, parents, or faculty members. They work for the trustees.

San Francisco teachers are striking for their students!Students, families & communities were on the picket lines & at the rallies. We are one of the wealthiest economies in the world and yet don’t cover healthcare for teachers’ families! Police are protected from budget cuts but schools aren’t.

The main demands of the union—paid dependent health care and better working conditions and staffing for special education—would cost about $35 million.

San Francisco added about twice that to the Police Department budget this year, despite the lowest crime rate in 50 years.

Among the most troubling responses to the virus have been facilities in Ohio, Louisiana, and elsewhere that have placed tremendous numbers of youth in their facilities into quarantines that, in practice, may be little different from solitary confinement, a particularly traumatic and damaging experience for young people that is prohibited by many state laws and policies and international human rights standards. Public health officials have rejected solitary confinement for adults as a non-medical, damaging and counterproductive response to the COVID-19 Pandemic.

In 2014, the New York Times said about a Black boy murdered by a cop with his hands up, "Michael Brown, 18, due to be buried on Monday, was no angel". PLEASE do not whitewash the past to emphasize how bad the present is. If we erase the past and Black lives, we have already lost. Stop it.

Michael Brown, 18, due to be buried on Monday, was no angel, with public records and interviews with friends and family revealing both problems and promise in his young life. Shortly before his encounter with Officer Wilson, the police say he was caught on a security camera stealing a box of cigars, pushing the clerk of a convenience store into a display case. He lived in a community that had rough patches, and he dabbled in drugs and alcohol. He had taken to rapping in recent months, producing lyrics that were by turns contemplative and vulgar. He got into at least one scuffle with a neighbor.

Footnote 4: It is not lost on us that Watson & Crick made use of Rosalind Franklin’s work without her knowledge or permission. Though beyond the scope of this paper, we want to acknowledge the way patriarchy constructs these men as the discoverers of world-changing knowledge that could not have been achieved without stealing this woman’s ideas. Particularly because Watson wrote of Franklin “The thought could not be avoided that the best home for a feminist was in another person’s lab,” she was subjected to much gender harassment that diminished her incredible contributions to this work.
