Having taken said “s-bahn” precisely here and walked across this parking lot to pee in the Fred Meyer while waiting for an intercity bus connection, I stand ready to complain.

Iway is composed of 16 individual projects to relocate a 45-year-old 1.6-mile stretch of I-195 and an adjacent 0.8-mile portion of I-95 through Providence. The highway was relocated 2,000 feet to the south of its former alignment and outside the barrier which protects the 350-year-old city from hurricane flooding. The project included 14 new bridges with a 1,200-foot, 8-lane mainline bridge over the Providence River, 25 lane-miles of new interstate, a new interchange with I-95, five miles of new city streets, and 4,100 feet of new pedestrian riverwalks. In addition, removal of the existing interstate freed up 20 acres of prime downtown real estate currently under redevelopment by the I-195 Redevelopment Commission.

The mainline Iway Bridge (Providence River Bridge) garnered national attention for its construction innovation. The bridge was largely constructed offsite to avoid more complicated barge-based construction and to allow simultaneous construction of its concrete foundation. The bridge was floated 12 miles into place in August 2006.

Bridge preservation work is scheduled at the Providence River (Iway Bridge).
Expect a left lane closure on 1-95 South, just prior to Exit 36A, and extending the length of the exit ramp until it merges with I-195 East, Sunday night, May 31 from 8 pm. to 5 a.m. Motorists can also expect a left lane closure on I-195 West, from the Providence River Bridge to the merge with 1-95 North, Tuesday night, June 2, from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. On I-195 West, over the Providence River Bridge, from just prior to Exit 1C to the 1-95 North and South split, expect one right lane to be closed from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m., and two right lanes to be closed from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m., Sunday-Wednesday nights, June 7-10. At the same location, motorists can also expect one left lane to be closed from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. and two left lanes to be closed from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m. on Thursday night,

As someone who walked across the highway from Amica to get the return bus, I don’t hate the deviation as much as you. But I get it.

A two lane entrance to a corporate park with no sidewalk. A black rectangular sign bears the name Amica in vibrant teal script. Ahead a large multi lane intersection with traffic lights hanging on span wires and no pedestrian signals under a cloudy rainy sky.

A bus stop sign mounted on a utility pole is the only amenity at this spot by a large highway, which has no sidewalks and a large grassy buffer before meeting the wet pavement of the road that snakes into the distance under a cloudy rainy sky.
