I write about the semiconductor industry for CRN from the lovely state of Maine. But I post here about a lot of other things, like video games, dad stuff, retro PCs, politics, music and TV shows.
I'm posting retro computing/retro gaming videos on Instagram like this for all the goblins out there who dig old Windows-based computers. www.instagram.com/windowsxp_go...
Southern Maine had a microburst in the afternoon today. There was no warning. Suddenly it started to downpour and then the wind was unlike anything I've seen before. It also hailed in some places. More than 10,000 people were without power in Greater Portland. Portland Jetport too.
It took a few years, but I finally put up @smgdraws.bsky.social's excellent "History of Personal Computers in Japan" print as well as a bunch of vintage computer magazine ads.
Finally got my new retro PC station set up! I only have the Dell Dimension 8300 powered on, and I'm realizing I could benefit from a KVM switch with VGA and PS/2 ports. Is there such a thing that would be compatible with Windows XP/98/95? #retroPC
I am transfixed by this compressed thumbnail of Don Draper from the Mad Men season one Blu-ray set. It feels particularly meme-ish.
I found the perfect desk for my retro PC station, and it means I finally have room for my Gateway 2000 monitor! I'm going to call this "Goblin's Delight."
I've been waiting a few years for the right time to start my second Mad Men rewatch with @mattzollerseitz.bsky.social's companion book. All it took was for my second child to be born! Since this is my first rewatch as a parent, I'm curious to see if the show will hit differently!
Hopefully the public wakes up to the inflationary effects of AI with Apple's announced price increases. Some of these increases are wild:
Oo, that's a nice one. I'm trying to get an era-appropriate desk that will aid with my room's retro feel. Something like this.
Already done. Just need a desk that will actually support this monstrosity!
Totally forgot that I installed Half-Life on it with the disc still in the tray.
I booted up this Dell Optiplex GX110 from 1999 with the intention of selling it at a yard sale, but it's so damn cool I might just have to keep it.
My four year old took this photo of me. Feels perfect for Father's Day.
Ah, it seems my decision to use a professional CRT monitor that takes only RGB and s-video input means I have some extra work cut out for me. Alas, this is the life I chose!
I saw this on Facebook Marketplace for a reasonable price and couldn't resist! It's kinda funny to me that UFO 50, more than anything else, inspired me to go back to the 8-bit era.
Microsoft has been one of the main contributors to the driver behind massive component price increases: the AI data center boom. And now its XBOX division is somehow going to double down on hardware when it's going to get prohibitively expensive for a good chunk of its target audience. 🤷🤷🤷
I am having such a fabulous time playing 007 First Light. Especially when I get to throw people off balconies over and over again.
Well well well, I am back--and with a new baby! My wife is thankfully doing very well with her recovery. I took a break from Bluesky because I've been struggling with loneliness for a while, and I was frustrated by how much harder it seems to make friends on here than it was on early Twitter.
Heads up to parents: I stumbled upon an AI-generated artist on Spotify called Tiny Tunes. The singer on "Wheels on the Bus" sounds suspiciously like @msrachelforlittles.bsky.social, and the song's second half suddenly transitions into the minor key, and there's another bad transition at the end.
$25 for a Sun SparcStation lot that has some water damage, and it's really close to me. Worth it?
The Twitter brand has been dead for almost three years, and Sonoma Creamery, a 91-year-old company, is like, "I don't give a fuck."
Stellan Skarsgård has been cast as Master Hand in 'THE SUPER SMASH BROS. MOVIE'.
