Brazil's Supreme Federal Court will decide the future of the Amazonian Soy Moratorium – the most effective voluntary zero-deforestation agreement.🌳 If abandoned, it could lead to 1.4m extra hectares of Amazon forest loss by 2036.‼️ The ruling has global implications for tackling deforestation.
While Europe’s leather sector may not need to comply with the #EUDR for now, the industry is not off the hook. Consumers still want deforestation-free leather. Tanneries must take action to finally clean up their supply chains.
🗓️On 21 October 2026, we’re joining the Good Business Matters mass lobby with @corporatejusticeuk.bsky.social to meet MPs and call for a Business, Human Rights & Environment Act that protects people and the environment from corporate-driven harms. 🚨 @ec.europa.eu has released its final changes to the list of products covered by the EU Deforestation Regulation. Leather will no longer be covered by this important supply chain law, despite evidence linking EU leather imports to deforestation. #EUDR 🔗 www.earthsight.org.uk/news/eudr-pr...
The EU Commission is proposing to add language specifically excluding ‘waste’ palm oil from the scope of the EU Deforestation Regulation, according to a draft leaked last week. This would see more than ¼ of all palm oil imports to the EU from Indonesia and Malaysia exempt from the #EUDR.
Yesterday, Earthsight and @mightyearth.org assembled outside Lineapelle London, a major leather trade fair, to ask tanneries and fashion brands: do you know where your leather comes from? 📢 Brands using leather must demand that all the leather they buy is deforestation-free and legally sourced.‼️🐄
‼️The UK Government has announced new regulations aiming to end UK consumption of products grown on illegally deforested land. UK businesses will need to ensure forest-risk commodities they sell are not produced from illegal deforestation.
‼️🌳 On #WorldRainforestDay, Earthsight, with the support of CCCA, reveals suspect timber from the Amazon continues to flow into Europe Dutch companies Hoogendoorn Hout & Van den Berg Houtgroep have sourced thousands of m3 of timber from an Amazon concession operated by Brazilian firm Samise
📢 CLOSING SOON: The @ec.europa.eu consultation on the EUDR ends on 1 June. If beef from deforested land is banned, why should leather from the same cow still be allowed into the EU? Removing leather would weaken the law and reward laggards. Have your say 🗣️ www.earthsight.org.uk/news/have-yo...
📰 Great piece out today on the EU Commission's plan to drop leather from the EUDR ➡️ bit.ly/4uraREJ Cattle ranching drives deforestation globally and in the Amazon. Keeping leather in scope could deliver nearly €2bn in environmental benefits per year. Instead, forests & communities will lose out.
18 MPs and peers from across party lines have called on the UK government to implement a law designed to end the import of commodities grown on illegally deforested land. ⬇️ The world’s forests can’t wait; 8.1 million hectares were lost in 2024. The time to implement this important law is now.
... high-risk imports have continued, including from an Indonesian plywood producer which sourced almost ALL of its tropical timber in 2024 from deforestation in Borneo. This underlines why the EUDR is needed: trade in products of deforestation persists, even as some companies raise their game.
Alongside 270 other organisations, we're demanding a seat at the table by asking President Von der Leyen to give us the same time she's giving industry leaders. We want a Civil Society Counter-Summit ✊ Organisations can sign the declaration here ➡️ friendsoftheearth.eu/sign-the-dec...
Timber company PT Mayawana Persada – the worst deforester in Indonesia’s plantation sector in recent years – has been granted a ‘sustainable’ label under the global wood certification scheme #PEFC We’re calling on PEFC to revoke the certification and improve their standards to stop greenwashing
⚠️ Polish authorities have detained people accused of importing Russian & Belarusian plywood in violation of EU sanctions, and they are now facing charges of up to 30 years. Read more: 24brussels.online/top-stories/... Image credit: Polish Ministry of Finance – National Revenue Administration

🎄As Europeans decorate their Christmas trees, the EU Parliament has passed amendments to delay and weaken the EU Deforestation Regulation, threatening thousands of hectares of forests.
Today, the EU parliament passed the first Omnibus Package, weakening the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive: delaying it to 2029, covering fewer companies, diluting supply chain monitoring and making justice harder to access. #CSDDD
“The community depends on the forest. In the past, we were spoilt by nature. Everything we needed was here.” Our latest report exposes deforestation damaging the livelihoods of local & Indigenous communities in Borneo, who rely on the forest for food, livelihoods, and medicine.
🚨 NEW joint statement: EU’s credibility on human rights & climate is on the line. Ahead of a vote in November that could weaken the #CSDDD, 140+ CSOs urge MEPs to back a strong, fair deal that protects communities & our planet, not corporate interests. 🔗 corporatejustice.org/publications...
🌳 Borneo’s forests are home to wildlife found nowhere else — orangutans, proboscis monkeys & dozens of unique birds. Our Risky Business report reveals how timber from bulldozed forests in Indonesia is connected to the supply chains of EU companies importing plywood, decking, and door frames. ⬇️
FSC members MUST reject Motion 45 at this week’s General Assembly, which would remove a strict limit on the amount of Intact Forest Landscapes that FSC-certified firms can degrade through logging. #FSCGA2025 #ForestsForAllForever

🚨 Brussels is backtracking - again! @ec.europa.eu seeks another delay to the #EUDR, and every second means more forest lost to satisfy European consumption. The EU Parliament & Council MUST reject this proposal and implement the law by the end of 2025. 🔗 www.earthsight.org.uk/news/eudr-de...
Meanwhile the #EUDR – which can rid EU supply chains of dirty soy – is under threat once again EU policymakers should be focused on implementing the law, not picking it to pieces at the demand of industry lobbyists 🔗 www.earthsight.org.uk/news/a-year-...
Secret Ingredient: A year of inaction⚠️ In September 2024, our investigation linked soy used in feed for chicken sold by McDonald’s and Europe’s leading supermarkets to deforestation, land grabbing, corruption and rights abuses in Brazil’s Cerrado. So, what's happened since?
⚠️ But progress is unsteady and the Cerrado's future is far from guaranteed. Last year, it lost more land to deforestation than any other biome in Brazil. Our upcoming analysis will show agribusiness continues to drive the destruction - watch this space! 👀
“Women who defend land rights and natural resources against mega-projects face greater risks and are among the most at-risk human rights defenders globally.” Their rights must be protected, and corporations must be held accountable. Read CJC's new briefing 🔗 bit.ly/4gmL2jy
What a way to start the week – we’ve just received a copy in the post of @nytimes.com featuring our investigation on the front page! Despite high-profile coverage exposing how its demand for wood is fueling the destruction of Borneo’s rainforests, the US RV industry remains silent. 🤐
