this one interests me because it might represent an actual technical limit. since LLMs don't actually remember the plot they're making, more complex narratives with many subplots, characters, and timeframes might be beyond their capacity.

AI also more often avoids subplots and fails to play with time jumps and flashbacks.

every now and then some news hits that makes me look at New Developments and wonder if i've been cursed with the lathe of heaven

The leaked materials identify the full set of session topics in this year's conference, scheduled for August at a sprawling estate in Dublin, Ireland, with a heavy emphasis on geopolitics and tech. Several relate to divisive issues, like "Bring Back Nuclear," "Disinformation & Deepfakes," "Battlefield Technologies," "Democracy Under Surveillance," "Taiwan and the AI Race," and "Three Predictions in Iran." Others are more personal. A few examples: "Build-a-Party," "Money (Does?) Buy Happiness," "How's Your Sex Life," "It's Fun to be in Charge," and "Research-Based Longevity Hacks" (Bryan Johnson also appears in the leak). And some sound ominous, including "Build-a-Cult" and "Navigating WWIII."

just read Abnormal Statistics by @interrobangbus.bsky.social and wow. i expected these stories to be distressing, but i didn't expect them to also be so moving. "Indiana Death Song" in particular is such a sad and powerful story. great reading for people with terrible childhoods.
