Views like David Birkett’s are the reason I left the SNP, despite being an indy supporter for my entire adult life.

Today, I'm not convinced we remain that broad church.
Two recent examples stand out.
First, during a conference debate over abortion buffer zones, now-former MSP John Mason expressed a sincerely held dissenting view. I disagreed with him, but I was uncomfortable with the hostility directed towards an elected parliamentarian simply for disagreeing.
And second, the leadership contest (and non-contest) involving Kate Forbes and the overreaction among some members to the prospect of her leading us.

Whatever one's view of her beliefs, the intensity of the reactions from some suggests that certain viewpoints are no longer considered welcome within the party, that should concern all of us.
So let me ask a simple question of my fellow
SNP members: Would you stand shoulder to shoulder with an independence-supporting Conservative to secure Scotland's independence?

This is just dishonest. It’s a complete misrepresentation to say that the backlash was due to her ‘having a conscience’. It was explicitly because of her backward, hateful beliefs. I’m sure her conscience told her she couldn’t lie about the beliefs, but she seems to be ok with lying now!

She told the audience: "I answered questions honestly about my faith, and the way it shaped my view of sex and gender, of marriage and family. The backlash was instant and fervent."
Forbes said that in commentary about her leadership bid "my experience of managing the nation's budget as finance secretary, or having the largest electoral majority of any parliamentarian, was less important apparently than - shocker of shockers - having a conscience"

Which members of the public supported you, Kate? When you lost the leadership contest because you said that gay people shouldn’t be able to get married?

Speaking on the final day of the ARC conference, Forbes said: "The end result felt like a victory because during that period I thought: I have not given in when I could have.
"Therefore, I did lose the contest but I absolutely won the public support and that feels good."

Three out of the four areas he suggested he will give Scots more power over are already devolved to the Scottish Government. Scottish Water, too, is already in public ownership, while ScotRail has been nationalised since 2022.

Burnham said the process would provide "new opportunities to extend devolution in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland by taking power deeper down".
