Great back-to-back shows this weekend, Barry Walker Unit at the 13th Moon Gravity Well and @patriciawolf.bsky.social / Cosmic Tones Research / Foote/Dickow / Pete Swanson/Ilyas Ahmed and DJ Carly Barton. Couldn't have been more different venues, both shows were amazing. Go see live music!!
It has basically become impossible for me to talk about SML the band without sounding unhinged haha. This band is achieving transcendence one 12-15 minute segment at a time. If you have ever, at any time in your life, enjoyed improvisational music, go and see them.
Just finished this excellent book by @lizpelly.bsky.social - and, no matter how terrible you think Spotify is for regular artists, I assure you things are much, much worse than you think. Go see a show, and buy some merch. We just cannot let oligarchs further destroy our world.
Cannot recommend this book more, it is spectacular. Andy Beta has done his part to erase decades of misogyny and small-minded criticism, giving AC the fair shake she deserved but didn’t receive in her lifetime. Top rec.
There is so much amazing music at Big Ears that I would need three extra bodies and minds to see everything I wanted, and I still have zero regrets prioritizing those SML sets over everything else.
Also my Big Ears 2026 report: SML is the best band on the planet, and it’s not close. And even that might be limiting the praise unnecessarily, they are creating the highest art. Seeing them in the round, for 6 sets, with guests was a peak experience.
I have an extra VIP pass for Big Ears to sell, prefer to sell it to a person and not give money to Ticketmaster in the ticket exchange, lmk if you have interest. (Selling for what I paid, 1325).
Don’t need one with tub or that goes in oven imo. I have the $250 breville one, use Rubbermaid commercial tub like this to cook in. Food sealer is helpful but not completely necessary.

In other news, finally spun the new vinyl release of High Flying, it's fantastic. Most excellent late-night j-funk grooves.
I am not sure if this is the case, but it feels cowardly to me that the councilors who voted against the amendment did so through absence rather than staying to vote.

This release sounds great. I enjoy getting the Dave's Picks, they usually highlight shows I haven't heard, maybe not the TOP top shows or anything, but some nice little gems, and fun to get cd's in the mail still. These two shows are great, fun stuff, band was clearly having fun in 81.

Stunned (and saddened) to read that Michael Hurley passed away, tried to see him at Big Ears this year (based on @natalieweiner.bsky.social rec), but couldn't swing it. Shared via Mississippi Records newsletter. Sheesh. Hug your friends + see legends while you can.
Reflecting on the amazing shows I was able to see this past weekend at Big Ears. It was a reminder that there is still so much good in the world, so much love, so many of us who don’t want what they are selling, that there are comrades in this life.
