The legal and operational requirements for the position are defined in Israel's Basic Law: The Government:Eligibility: Candidates must be at least 30 years old, an adult resident and citizen of Israel, and a current Member of the Knesset.Criminal Record Constraints: By law, individuals convicted of a crime involving moral turpitude within the seven years prior to their candidacy are barred from serving.Presidential Nomination: Following a national election, the President consults with party leaders in the Knesset to determine who has the best chance of forming a government. The President then tasks a specific MK with this responsibility.Coalition Building: The designated candidate must form a government capable of passing a vote of confidence. Because no single party has ever won an outright majority in the Knesset, the Prime Minister must build a coalition of parties representing at least 61 of the 120 Knesset members.Investiture Vote: Once a coalition agreement is finalized, the Prime Minister presents their cabinet and government platform to the Knesset. To officially take office, they must receive a majority vote of confidence from the parliament.
