Less than an hour in, and this job was already turning out to be a pain in the ass. Literally. Nadine was perched on the edge of a metal barstool that was decidedly too small for her six-foot-one frame. Its rounded edge dug into her tailbone, sending a steady, dull ache down the backs of her legs. Even worse, every time she shifted her weight, the damn thing creaked like an ungreased hinge. Nadine sighed to herself and took a sip of her beer. She should have listened to the receptionist when he tried to dissuade her from taking this bounty.
“That’s been posted for three weeks,” he’d said. “Two other hunters already gave up. She’s a runner.”
Nadine had snorted at him then, snatching the page off the corkboard and exchanging it for a thick case file. The target was a semi-notorious art...

Ulu was waiting on the sofa. She was still in her day clothes and clearly tired around the eyes, but the smile on her face could’ve powered the entire station.
“Twenty-two minutes,” Ulu laughed as the door slid shut. “You’re late.”
“Does this make up for it?” Nadine asked, pulling a green-glass bottle from behind her back.
“Oh, you didn’t!”
Nadine just snorted at her. After she popped the cork, she fished her two nicest glasses from the back of the kitchen cupboard and filled them with fizz.
“I propose a toast,” Nadine said as she delivered Ulu’s drink. “To your first big sale, and many more to come.”

#WIPSnips Domestic charms and feminine wiles from an early chapter of CAT/MOUSE 2 💙📦

New clothes came first. Little shirts and flowy skirts and linen dresses to let her skin breathe in the summer heat, all meticulously modeled before being stuffed into the hall closet beside Nadine’s collection of leather jackets. Then came the things Nadine found less familiar: skin creams, face masks, lipsticks, perfume, tiny pots of colorful powders and soft brushes to apply them with.
Soon there was enough to occupy half the bathroom counter, but Nadine didn’t mind. There was plenty of space next to her all-purpose lotion and half-empty tub of hair gel. So too was there room in the shower for Ulu’s vast array of soaps, gels, and vaguely abrasive scrubs. The sugar-fruit smell of them lasted for hours after every bath, clinging to the walls like frilly tobacco smoke.

“What’re you grinning about?” Ulu giggled.
“I’m just enjoyin’ the view,” Nadine said. “Listenin’ to you make plans, feelin’ happy about the future… It’s nice.”

Nadine checked her cuff-drive. Just past nine. The club would be busy tonight.
She stepped into the hall with a quiet sigh, ready to rush through the rest of her routine, only to pause as a sharp electronic chime rang out from the living room. Ulu’s voice line.
“Hello?” the Diralith answered. Nadine could hear the smile in her voice. “Oh, hey, Andi! Yeah, I can talk now. No, no, you’re fine.”
Nadine forgot all about work. After a few seconds of silence, she poked her head around the corner and found Ulu perched on the arm of the sofa. Ulu flashed her an excited grin.

Nadine considered the wardens, too. With salaries, time off, and nigh-limitless access to the camera and audio feeds, they were good suspects. But not good enough — not for Nadine. Even this clean, calm Federation prison was still populated by grifters and opportunists, guards very much included. A gift given here never came without consequence.
This particular gift, though, was pointedly unconditional. There was no question. No demand. Just a quiet, dangerous statement.
Someone is listening.
