A fun thing (if you’re a very particular kind of nerd) is making a booklist, broken down into required and suggested reading, sending it to the (mostly) retired clergy in your parish, and then getting responses like this. ⚓️
The source of the perpetual Sunday morning question of “How time do I *really* need to get ready for church?”
Bonus for showing up at church on the wrong Saturday is discovering that in the process of weeding out extra books from the basement, someone decided to give away a bunch of our first rector’s books. While I don’t technically *need* any of these, I think I might take them home for safekeeping. 📕
I’m sitting in the shade on my lunch break but it’s 86 degrees and the shade doesn’t feel shady. Even the breeze off of the marsh is hot. This is not the PNW summer I grew up with!
Here’s Martha, on the day my daughter and son-in-law adopted her. May your brain remember that you are always held in God’s lap.
Some parishes have outdoor worship in the summer, or in another less “formal” location. In ours it was a tradition to move summer worship into our fellowship hall, which was admittedly a beautiful setting, overlooking the forest and the sea beyond.
Alternately there’s this character backstory: My ex-Roman Catholic parents tried to raise me without any connection to religion, except for the one flaw in their plan: they agreed to be models for an artist who was painting a portrait of the Holy Family as hippies. I was blonde Jesus. Sealed as…
The first thing I saw when I opened Reddit this morning, lol. Filing this under “things that stay the same” for those times when the world seems like it’s changing too fast. ⚓️
Obviously yes because adorable and doesn’t take up hardly any space (1928 BCP printed in 1953)
New fringe benefit of discerning in a congregation which has 6 retired priests in it just dropped. 📕
post the best picture you have ever taken of your pet (if you feel like it):
For my own edification, here is what the report was supposed to cover in 3-4 pages. I feel like it was a great review of the very detailed list of required tasks that I had just worked my way through, but there certainly wasn’t room for a spiritual autobiography, nor did they ask for one.
Leading Zoom MP with my cat Brie is like leading MP with an adorable furry toddler who can climb onto the desk. She LOVES being a part of it, hogs the camera, demands snuggles & kisses, and is chaos incarnate, while I deftly juggle the BCP & Bible. Now she’s discovered that she loves my coffee! 📕
Still waiting for the caffeine to fully kick in and had to retake the test because of how many answers I was fuzzy on the first time through. Couldn’t let the original Quaker/Puritan answer stand.
I went on a church field trip again today, this time to the big city. Epiphany Seattle was quite impressive! I only intended to attend one service but ended up staying for 3 of their 5 Sunday services! Rite I High Mass, afternoon “Come As You Are” Eucharist and Choral Evensong. What a day! ⚓️
Every once in a while you get to be the first vehicle onto the ferry but very rarely do you also get a sky that looks like this.
My day was spent weeding an overgrown path through this garden while listening to N.T. Wright’s Simply Christian for 7.5 hours. A retired New Testament professor told me that he was too conservative for his taste. Interesting to reflect on while listening. It wasn’t a bad way to spend the work day 📕
I spent 7 hours listening to a David Bentley Hart audiobook while I worked today, so I decided to retake this quiz. Huh. Go figure. ⚓️
The final book from the Diocesan Discernment required reading list, Unexpected Consequences: the Diaconate Renewed, arrived from the Diocesan Resource Center. It is actually the perfect reading for today, after having visited a Total Common Ministry parish for the first time yesterday. ⚓️
It’s not every day that you get to honor and remember a great saint of your community, AND take home a “goody bag” of her composted remains for your garden! Nancy Skinner Nordhoff changed so many lives. What a legacy, what a blessing. obituaries.seattletimes.com/obituary/nan...
Every once in awhile we get the front spot on the boat. Glad to be headed home after day 2 at the dealership. One does always wonder how strong that net actually is. Island life.
Instead of earning desperately needed money, I am spending the day in the purgatory of the waiting room at the dealership service department, while they assess my truck. To go along with the overall vibe, the only book I brought was The Liberation of the Laity. Pray for me. 📕
I made it to my church home away from home! Mom bailed on the outing so it was Florence + the Machine at full volume all the way here. Love St Paul’s Bellingham 💜 ⚓️
My cat child is lovingly celebrating me. So generous. So kind. I might be late getting out the door to visit my human child!
