🥾 I hiked up to the Lonely Shepherd in Llangattock. Legend says the stone tower is a shepherd who was transformed into limestone for his cruelty to his wife who drowned herself in the river Usk. He is cursed to wake on Midsummer’s Eve to call her name before taking his place again on the hill.
⛰️ I recently hiked up to Skirrid Fawr in Abergavenny. 🌳 It’s steep in the forest but there is this amazing and breathtaking moment when you finally come out of the trees and see beautiful Monmouthshire laid out before you like a patchwork quilt.
Over to the right of the picture is where the slurry would have collapsed down the hill. If you look closely you can see Aberfan cemetery and the white rows of graves of the children killed.
Behind my house high on the mountain there’s a radio tower that’s loomed over our village since I came to Wales when I was 7 years old. I decided to hike up to it last week and see what view the tower was enjoying. I enjoyed a thermos of coffee while taking in this stunning view of Aberfan.
📍 Hay Bluff near Hay on Wye. ⛰️ The start of this walk is a killer on the legs but the views are so worth it.
⛰️ Pen Garnbugail in Merthyr Tydfil. 📍 Some call it the leaning trig of south Wales because, although you can’t tell in this video, the trig pillar is tipping sideways slightly.

A cool little trinket I was gifted recently. ‘Votes for Women’ suffragette penny used between 1913–1914 in protest against women being denied the right to vote. Stamping pennies was a good way to spread the suffragettes message as pennies circulated widely among all social classes at the time.
🐈⬛ Nothing prepares you for the loss of a pet. 💔 Yesterday I was at my desk writing when my lovely cat Giles started struggling to breathe. 🐈⬛ I rushed him to the vets but there was nothing they could do. He was having a heart attack and couldn’t be saved. 💔 Our boy will be truly missed.
🦇 It’s bat day! Every August these bats show up to roost in my roof. They stay for the winter then leave again in the spring. At 5:30am I woke up to the light in my bedroom appearing to flicker. I looked out the window and saw our bats had returned.
☀️ A fabulous weekend of food, family, books and nature in my favourite place. 🥶 Looking forward to some cooler weather tomorrow though!
🦋 A peacock butterfly wing found on the floor in a south Wales woodland. ♥️ So beautiful up close.
🐇 The Warren in Hay on Wye. 🌳 A Site of Special Scientific Interest - in the 70s there was a bid to turn it into a caravan park. 🍃 But locals raised enough money to buy it themselves. 🌾It’s been know locally as The Warren for centuries because it was once used to breed rabbits for food.
🐦⬛ Last night’s birdwatching to make the most of weeknights instead of only living for the weekend. 🪶 My garden has about 15 feeders now so there are plenty of feathered visitors. ☕️ The tea and doughnuts were good too!

☔️ Off for a walk in the woods in the tipping down rain because I can’t bear to stay inside on a weekend.
🍄🟫 Sulphur tuft mushrooms growing on a decaying log. 🍂 Common in the autumn but you can see them throughout the year. 🌕 They are are bioluminescent and can glow in the dark - though not very strongly. 📷The effect it best when shining the mushrooms with a UV light or using a long camera exposure.
🌳 Last night’s dinner at Garwnant Forestry in Bannau Brycheiniog National Park. 📱 There’s no phone signal up there so utter bliss. 🪶 We were treated to a pair of jays flying back and forth while we ate.
🪶 A jay feather. I’d like to be able to claim credit for finding this electric blue beauty but I walked straight past it and my daughter picked it up.
