The second paper of the day is "Ponos, Poetic Labour and Pindar the 'Pre-Capitalist'" by Tim Roe, who is bringing Gramscian ideas to read ideology and labour in Pindar.

Third day of work on the panel "Gramsci, Marx, and the Pre-capitalist World" at #CCC26. We started early with an excellent paper by Valentino Gargano on "Tragedy, Euripides, and Intersectionality: Past Approaches and Future Avenues".

Concluding our works today, Christopher Anaforian gave a wonderful paper about "The New Language of Old vents: Daniel De Leon’s Roman Revolution 'Two Pages from Roman History' and Marxist/protoGramscian Reception of Rome" #CCC26

And in the afternoon sessions, in our "Gramsci, Marx, and the Pre-Capitalist World" at #CCC26, we had a lot of fun listening to Simone Mucci talk about "Thorstein Veblen's (Historical) Materialism, Luxury Antidotes in the Roman World".

Finally, Raúl López Núñez brought E. Ilyenkov intocthe debate with a paler om "Dialectics and the Complexity of Realities on the Roman Economy".

Vittorio Saldutti followed with a paper on "Disrupting Plans: The problematic reception (or lack of thereof) of the Formen in the Finley-Croix debate"

On the "Gramsci, Marx, and the Pre-capitalist World" panel at #CCC26, we had three wonderful papers this morning. In the first panel, Tom Clements spoke about "Struggle with Class Consciousness" in relation to De Ste. Croix's work.

This morning I contributed a paper on "Oblivion and the politics of articulation" to the wonderful panel "Who gets forgotten?" Convened by Giulia Vettori and my dear friend Michele Bellomo at #CCC26

Second up in our panel on #precapgramsci, it was my turn! I talked about the Seminario di Antichista as Gramscian Grundrissers, trying to trace Gramscian themes and ideas in the work of 1970s Italian ancient historias of the Istituto Gramsci #CCC26 #CCC2026

And we're off! Andrea Avalli opens our panel at #CCC2026 on Gramsci, Marx and the Pre-capitalist World, with a talk about "End of History? Italian classical historiography between Marxism and post-modernism (1975-1982)"

Then back to Gramsci and the political use of his name in Valditara’s rhetoric about education, Latin and grammar. Huge thanks to Bev Back @henryhbclarke.bsky.social and the Leeds classicists for having me. It was great to meet them in person after we had been teaching together during the pandemic.

Then off to Naples for the brilliant “Economy and Power in the Ancient World” conference, where I talked about the Lex Gabinia (a never-studied-before topic, as all Roman historians would tell you 😆). So many lovely colleagues like @lordscribonius.bsky.social (but many are not on here)

It’s been a chaotic and exciting month: three talks squeezed between teaching and everything else. Kicked off on Nov 4th at Sapienza (online), talking Gramsci, normative grammar, and Latin education in today’s school debates in Italy.

First panel at #RomRep70 : Bertrand Augier snd Gaelle Perrot talked about their CRRITIC project and Ed Bispham guided us in a reading of the Pro Cluentio reflecting on what it can tell us about ancient narratives of the 70s #romanhistory #ancienthistory @rhulclassics.bsky.social
