I’ve been on here less - do you miss me? It is a big week in Newport! This summer, I feel like everything is happening at once. Let’s go through it 👇👇
Councilor Xay proposed a five part package of amendments that ultimately passed. I’m sure we will return to this tomorrow night.
Part 3: thank you Councilor Pinnock for bringing such passion and dedication to our community and our kids. All community kids are our kids. @queenpep43.bsky.social
The next 3 posts will be Councilor Pinnock @queenpep43.bsky.social sharing her piece on why it’s unacceptable for us to not fund the schools to the point they need.
Below is the increase chart that Kendra kindly dropped in the comments for me. I have clipped the increase column with the corresponding monetary values for that year. (50/?)
Tomorrow, Earth Day 🌏🍃🌻 itself, I will be joining @aq-resilience.bsky.social at Ragged Island Brewing in Portsmouth to, you guessed it, talk about composting and to partake in the fun climate planning & activities that Aquidneck Resilience will have. Family friendly; more details on poster.
Thank you to everyone who stopped by Miantonomi Park today! I got to talk about compost and I got to see @bikenewportri.bsky.social dirt track for the first time, which is SO cool. A little kid was shredding on there- so neat. Sign up to compost if you haven’t already: blackearthcompost.com/Newport
I will be representing the EEC at the Health Equity Zone’s Earth Day event with @aq-resilience.bsky.social @bikenewportri.bsky.social and other organizations in/around the City of Newport. Come sign up for composting and partake in fun Earth day activities! Next Saturday, 4/18 in Miantonomi Park.
Diverting your food waste to compost pickup makes your trash less stinky and reduces the trash you’re sending to landfill by a LOT - usually about 30%. In RI, we have 1 landfill and it’s filling fast, so any reduction helps. Plus this in turn reduces carbon emissions, which is better for all.
Cannot overstate how cute Focus Friend from @hankgreen.bsky.social is- and it helps me stay off this/other apps at work or when I want to be focusing on other things. My brain cannot stay in one place without help and look how cute he is 😭😭😭
I must have a million of this photo and it never gets old. How lucky are we to live in such a beautiful place. Go outside, folks. It helps.
We had a great time at the 70th Newport St Patrick’s Day Parade and it was an absolutely gorgeous day. Let’s remember while we celebrate that all liberation is connected and the Irish story is all about liberation. Free Palestine. No war with Iran.
I didn't read this agenda beforehand thoroughly and therefore I don't have a link to my previous posts about it, but this is a screenshot from the item that describes the background. The clarifiers are required infrastructure to ensure water pollution control and comply with environmental law.(21/?)
Fun things cooking in the @aq-resilience.bsky.social office. Thanks for having me over, Glennie & Emma!
And we’re off! Director Schultz gives some background before the consulting team gets up to share the plan and reasoning behind it.
The good news is that I instead will be able to attend this workshop on Easton’s Pond, which IS in city council chambers. This is cool- I won’t live post because it’s a workshop but will share highlights.
I was plowed out today but the snow removal continues. Also, if you’re able, consider helping shovel out bus stops and school sidewalks!
Oh my goodness could they be coming?! I said we’d be able to get out on Friday- we’ll see if I’m right!
The City of Newport is so clearly being like - please, dear god, follow the rules so we can clear the snow we are begging you
If your street is still blocked (like mine) don’t worry, they’re coming. And maybe don’t think about the fact that we’re getting more snow today 🫣🫣
This part really fucking got me. Reka is a Hungarian immigrant who escaped Nazi Germany. She speaks about her experience of the US taking her in but demanding gratitude and zero criticism, no matter what. This is what we do to immigrants today, still.
Even women of relative privilege are not immune from controlling husbands and doctors who tend to their husband, not to them. If you think this doesn’t happen now, you’re delusional. But it was worse and it could be again.
Newport folks - sign up for 311 alerts if you don’t get them already. We just got this update 👇👇
Reminds me of this, which I saved when I came across it on the Internet:
