My brilliant friend is on a mission to visit every cathedral in England, and sometimes I get to join her. So off we hopped to Guildford today. (Hot journey. Thank goodness for air conditioned trains). This inscription is a bit lovely.

The local Sign Guy has been at it again.

Went to my first Pride today, and hung out with the librarians. They had leaflets in wheel along shopping trolleys and I love them.

Nice chat with locum GP about migraines. Advice from neurology is trying topiramate. Don't fancy that much. And the "lifestyle" stuff - relaxation, reducing screen time etc, is harder when the old OCD is playing up. Verily, it me.

Just discovered it's Joan of Arc's feast day. Here is a terrible photo I took of a letter dictated and signed by her, from the Medieval Women exhibition at the British Library last year. It blew my mind then, and it blows my mind now.

Really struck by this excerpt from Dr Lucy Sixsmith's book in the CT. OCD is a many-faceted bastard, with a host of causes, but. The endless anxiety of: Have I really surrendered? Each thought? Each action? Am I really living for God?And how will I know if it "took"? 1/2

There were many moments when I wondered whether the sense of surrender actually changed anything. Having thrown yourselves out on the tide of God's glory, flung wide your arms, knelt down over and over, how could you know whether God had made anything good come from your life or through your clumsy words, your awkwardness, the unskilled works of your hands? How many times did you need to lay down your soul on the carpeted floor of a former cinema before God would scoop it up?
Was there anyway of confirming whether God had included you in his purposes, or whether you were repeating "Here I am, send me" while remaining unsent? You'd been told that a good tree bore good fruit, so the unfruitfulness of your own life had to be a worry. It would have been nice to know whether the procedure took, so to speak, whether it was a surrendered life, in fact, that you were actually living.

The world continues to go to hell in a handcart. At the same time, my very substantial tattoo is finished. Because something has to be lovely, doesn't it?

David Frost in the Torygraph and Bijan Omrani in the Spectator. Almost identical. Hm. Incidentally, the idea that Christianity might be the most disapproved-of belief system is absolutely feckin' hilarious. This persecution complex shouted about by a certain type of Christian is quite wild.

An extract from David Frost's article in the Telegraph:
There is also the collapse of the narrative of inevitable progress and of the belief that young people will always be economically better off than their parents, alongside the growing dysfunction in society starting with the pandemic. All this may be generating a tendency to look beyond economics for life satisfaction.
Then there is the reaction against our preachy state discourse about society, with people looking at Christianity precisely because it is the most disapproved-of belief system among secular progressives. And another factor may be the growing visibility of Islam, whose adherents, for good or ill, often take their religion more seriously than most of us.

If there is a rebellion, it is against the Boomers who have left Gen-Z with spiralling debt and a fractured country, while failing to pass on a Christian religious culture that might offer personal solace in the midst of chaos and the tools to re-knit society together. The questions I have been asked again and again by young people is "How are we going to reconnect?" And "how are we going to repair the damage?" The self-indulgent Boomers and the schoolmarmish secularists are driving the youth to be rebels with a cause: religious restoration.$
