Chaplin too was preoccupied with Kennedy's assassination and sparred with Buckley about it. Chaplin was one of many who found it hard to believe Oswald had acted alone.

"Your mode of reasoning is very much like that of the John Birch Society," Buckley replied.

"Yes," said Chaplin, I have no doubt the John Birch Society had something do with it."

He also said, "I don't trust the FBI. Do you, Mr. Buckley?"

"No," said Buckley. "They let you get out of the country without paying your income tax.

Chaplin was amused. He enjoyed matching wits with intellectuals, the quicker the replies the better. And few were quicker than Buckley.

"Bill was being masterfully skeptical," Kenner later said, "dissenting quite principally without offending Chaplin in any way."

But Pat Buckley was mortified. More than once she kicked Bill under the table. Afterward, Oona Chaplin commiserated, telling Pat, "I've been kicking mine for twenty years. It doesn't work."
