That light is wrong.

Light filtering through railings onto a porch. The light looks like it’s coming from an old sodium light but it’s just regular sunlight filtered through wildfire smoke.

Rude but fair, there was a lot of misery to observe and discuss today.

iPhone daily usage chart for battery showing that Bluesky has used 34% more battery today compared to the last seven days. it was on for 1 hour and 29 minutes longer than usual.

Well look at that, from an 1851 book on Floral Emblems, making the justification for the deep historical use of visual symbols.

In the early days of our own history we find the rudest symbols were sufficient to answer the purpose of distinguishing one man, or band of men, from another. The Scottish clans were generally particularised by the pattern or colours of their tartan plaid.

Yes, I am fascinated, so that's a great one to add to my list to read. Honestly this stuff makes me think how much easier it would be if you could just put "not explained" down once in a while when making your argument.

A table of the trees that correspond with the letters of the Irish alphabet but two of them just say "not explained" instead of listing a tree.

Wilentz: I felt like Václav Havel in reverse.
He would have to publish his stuff here, and I had to publish my stuff in the Czech Republic. There was a moment when saying the things that I had to say were met with a rather inhospitable atmosphere, which I perfectly understand. Any port in a storm.
And it's a very fine journal.
