Erin Dwyer aka Ginger Is A Construct
@erindwyer
History professor @ OU, views are my own. Author of Mastering Emotions, 2021. I write about slavery, emotions, & poison, I skeet about teaching, politics, & pop culture. She / hers. Proud union member. Live in Detroit but my heart is still in NOLA
My partner got a CD player to hook up to our speakers so we can get even more pompous about physical media than we already are and break into CDs we haven’t listened to in eons, we inaugurated her with Hole’s Live Through This.
Love the reporter suggesting that evidence is leaning towards the statue being cursed.
Accuweather over here trying to find the silver lining. "Your power may go out but you'll be able to open your windows because air quality may improve!"
I love how she always gives herself the full "Monkey Christ" filter and leaves him untouched. Find yourself a lover who glows you both up.
Oh I’m here for surrealist (and sirrealist) Arby’s
Now that it’s done I’m fondly recalling the baffled look on the art supply store clerk’s face when she said “what are you making with these supplies?” & I told her they were for a Soviet propaganda-style portrait of our elderly cat, Nadezhda, who loves to eat roses.
Thinking of @actualnames.bsky.social as I'm researching the first owner of a neighbor's Detroit home for an upcoming historic home tour, in 1950 she was living in Carmel-By-The-Sea with her alleged nephew named... Basil Lovely.
Haaland versus Harry Kane is gonna be looking like a scene from the live action BFG
How do you do, fellow kids? I'm not cheugy, all the smart juniors are wearing suits under their coats. Probably roughly 6-7.
Helping neighbors research their homes for the upcoming home tour means combing through a lot of newspapers from the 1930s to 1950s, finding all sorts of gems. Can you shampoo your hair in bed?? You sure can, diva! Bed rot, but make it cheerful and health-conscious!
I know I was gushing about it yesterday but @radial.racing is great for a mountain stage like today because at a glance you can see not only the distance to finish but if you should tune in for great climbs! #TdF
If y’all have been enjoying Waze giving World Cup updates and / or you love the Tour de France but need to hold down a job (booo) this app is amazing, and you can sign in with your Bluesky account!
Real meta moment when the Telemundo announcers realized Leo DiCaprio was in the audience:
Love a casual enough party where I can cook while chatting with friends, and yesterday it meant that my friend gave me a masa tortilla workshop. I learned so much about cooking when I had roommates, let’s normalize gatherings where we cook together, try new things, and skill share.
We found some lime green sprinkles last week and immediately knew what the theme would be for the cake for our taco party today, behold the reflecting pool and the Washmallow Monument:
Made a cake with the kiddo and when it came time to mix the dry and wet ingredients she said “flood the wets!” It makes no sense and will forever be how I think of it now, it’s from the “dust my wets” school of culinary arts.
I've spent days hunting down details about an enslaved woman named Ruthy who was accused of poisoning her enslaver only to outlive him, be acquitted, & live to see freedom. These are hard stories, but I'm finding joy in his estate being charged $100 for her defense & $500 for the failed prosecution.
Reminds me of this joke on the wall at the incredible @planetworddc.bsky.social museum that cracks me up every time:
Tip for running in this heat wave: do intervals! Jog at a moderate pace until you turn a corner and encounter an aggressive wild turkey, then sprint away from it while strategizing how you’d fight it if it catches up to you:
We call him “Viva Las Jesus,” he’s acquired more jewelry in the intervening years:
30 Rock predicted so much about the decades to come
This was PLAGUING me yesterday until the incredible @yodacat.bsky.social dug up another under cited longer quote from a Black history group on Facebook. I was hitting my head against the wall searching Baltimore-area papers but finally expanded my parameters thanks to Yoda and jackpot:
We visited the cemetery where Hans Christian Anderson is buried when we were in Copenhagen in 2017 so I can picture exactly where he’s spinning:
The front page of the Detroit Free Press today, aging like cottage cheese in a hot car.
