Valley of Fire State Park is one of my original stomping grounds when I was a rock climber living in Las Vegas and just starting out as a professional painter. I was drawn to the bold colors and strong compositional elements in the red rocks, and my favorite rock formation to paint is called the "Seven Sisters." I recently visited Cezanne's hometown of Aix-en-Provence in southern France. I stood where he painted his famous "leaning" mountains (yes, the mountain really does lean!) All around me were immensely tall pine trees that swayed in the wind and caught the late afternoon golden light. I stood enraptured by these trees, taking about a hundred photographs of them, while I wandered around Cezanne's hilltop.
This painting is a tribute not only to Cezanne but also to David Hockney, who just passed away a few days ago. Hockney loved trees as I do--and when I first began my career as an artist, I was absolutely inspired by Hockney, who was one of the most famous living painters of his time... and he painted trees and landscapes as I did. I also admire how Hockney (and Cézanne) both painted in their own signature styles, creating landscape paintings from their unique perspectives and in ways no one else was doing.
I hope they appreciate my tribute, wherever they are.

My first hike up the side of Mt Rainier was one of the most incredible hikes I've ever done. There was a blanket of clouds hovering over the mountain's peak as I was ascending the trail, but when I reached the top, the clouds dissipated, and I got my first glimpse of Rainier's peak up close and personal. The sheer magnitude of the mountain was overwhelming. I have been thinking ever since about how to communicate the incredible size of Rainier with my paintbrush. I finally completed this work, which captures my emotional state seeing the peak. I hope it moves you the way it moved me.
