The investigators found ❌ Sheep transported without legally-required ear tags ❌ Animals mishandled + transported in injurious vehicles Animal Welfare Foundation e.V. + Animals International point out these findings indicate structural weaknesses in Romania’s live export system: bit.ly/44RYt5Y
An investigation by Animal Welfare Foundation e.V. + Tierschutzbund Zürich shows animals are being exported from Romania while missing identification + in very poor conditions. Given that Romania accounted for 43% of all EU live animal sea exports last year, these findings are especially alarming.
Last week, the Intergroup on Animal Welfare delivered the 1st official presentation to the EU roadmap to phase out animal testing in safety assessment priorities. Thanks to the @Ec.europa.eu, NGOs and MEPs for making this a meaningful exchange. Watch the session: youtube.com/live/FO08L2C...
🐺 A single, unverified case paved the way for the downgrade of the #wolf's protected status across Europe. Yet the key forensic step (a necropsy) was never carried out. What does the evidence actually show? 📅 16 July | 15:00 GMT 🛜 Live on Zoom | bit.ly/4vs2iKb
There's no way this kind of practice should be legal. While updating the EU's animal welfare laws, strict limits on the amount of animals that can be reared in the same space should be set, in-line with the latest science. We're calling for change 👉 bit.ly/4wVBrY7
Imagine spending every second of every day hemmed into a huge crowd. Surrounded by constant noise. Competing for food and water. Unable to rest or move naturally. Millions of chickens reared for meat in Europe are living this way, right now. Because EU law permits it. 🇪🇺👎
The future of medicine should be human-relevant. ✅️ The upcoming EU Biotech Act is a chance to accelerate innovation and support the uptake of non-animal methods in research. Europe shouldn't miss this opportunity!

🤔 Can a horse have two identities? 🐴 It happens more often than you might think & it has consequences for animal welfare, public health + fraud prevention. Learn why Europe needs a modern approach to equine traceability in our 🆕 report ➡️ bit.ly/4y7xT69
While it's excellent to see the @ec.europa.eu supporting higher welfare, we need: 🟢 Concrete timelines for when any welfare improvements will be made 🟢 Policies to push forward the suggested welfare measures - to ensure these words become actions www.eurogroupforanimals.org/news/eu-live...
The #EULivestockStrategy has been published! It's great to see many suggestions for improved animal welfare in this file: including a reference on banning cage farming for sows & hens + ending male chick culling. Now, we need solid commitments. www.eurogroupforanimals.org/news/eu-live...
‼️ Europe's nature laws are under review. The EU is consulting the public on the Birds & Habitats Directives until 10 Aug 2026. If you want stronger protection for wildlife, forests, rivers & wetlands, make your voice heard 🗣️ ➡️ bit.ly/4uPLtbE

The Dutch government is speaking up on phasing out cages! 🇳🇱 The new State Secretary, who is responsible for animal welfare, has repeatedly shown support for a cage ban, including in a recent letter to the House of Representatives. More via @ciwf.nl 👉 bit.ly/442jWJ9
Cage farming should be illegal! This practice is not only a huge source of animal suffering, but 1.4 million European citizens already called for a cage ban years ago. Policy-makers, it's time to act - and end the cage age for good. 🇪🇺⛓️💥 #HowIsThisLegal #ForwardForAnimals
They suffer from lesions, lameness, UTIs, and more. They're unable to interact naturally with their piglets. They can barely stand up or sit down properly. Millions of sows spend around half of every year this way in the EU... trapped in a miserable cage. 🐖⛓️
These new rules apply to both domestic + imported products + will come into effect in 2027. This step could further fuel important welfare debates at EU level, with citizens becoming increasingly aware of key welfare issues. More on welfare labelling: bit.ly/4v7TtVs
🇨🇭 Switzerland pushes for more welfare transparency! The Federal Department of Home Affairs has announced mandatory labelling for various animal products, so citizens can see when these products have come from animals who have endured painful procedures such as beak trimming.
Yesterday, we represented civil society in Commissioner Kadis' Commission's Implementation Dialogue on Aquaculture. We called on the @ec.europa.eu to pave the way for binding aquatic animal welfare standards in the Vision 2040 for aquaculture and fisheries expected in October.
😺🐶 It took more than 20 years to secure the EU's first-ever legislation protecting dogs & cats. Our Annual Report looks at the persistence behind this milestone & the work still ahead to improve the lives of millions more animals. Read more ➡️ bit.ly/4a7mNnt

Five years ago today, the @ec.europa.eu committed to deliver proposals to #EndtheCageAge, but so far, it has failed to deliver on its promise. So we took action in Brussels with @ciwf.eu, @anima-int.bsky.social & the EtCA coalition, urging the EU to deliver proposals to #EndtheCageAge 📣
The EU has reached a provisional agreement to strengthen @echa.europa.eu, reinforcing its role in assessing chemical risks. As ECHA's responsibilities grow, so should the use of animal-free methods that better protect people, animals & the environment. More ➡️ bit.ly/3STrsn8

❤️ Three inspiring days at @scifaw.bsky.social for our team members Elena Nalon & Iwona Mertin! We shared how science can be translated into enforceable legislation, & why the upcoming EU rules on dogs + cats must continue to be informed by the latest scientific evidence.
📢 Policy-makers must prioritise animal welfare as they update the EU's live transport laws! This process is happening right now, and has the power to impact billions of animals both in and outside of the EU. Sign the open letter: bit.ly/4gcWuQM
‼️ A new report by Animal Welfare Foundation e.V., Tierschutzbund Zürich and Robin des Bois reveals that the global livestock fleet is in a shocking state. It's not okay that the vessels that are being used to transport animals worldwide are so dangerous. Some facts 👇
