I’ve been reworking the opening of my short story ‘Split Ends’.

Spewing a long brown plume, the smokestack loomed out of the cornfields like a mutant stalk. The rest was bowling, alleys and bars, parks and strip malls, industrial waste ponds and overgrown, poison ivy-choked woods, factories, homes, schools and churches, cancers and pieties, broken people, and shattered Vietnam veterans alongside dust- and clover-scented meadows shimmering and simmering in the summer sun, brimming with daddy long-legs, monarchs, copperheads, shell, casings and rabbits, humming with honeybees and Japanese beetles during the day and lightning bugs flashing Morse code at night.

My film school assignment was to create a storyboard, so I picked a scene from my recently completed screenplay and headed to a second-hand store to pick up a Ken and Barbie. The first photo shows what I found. I sewed and crocheted clothes to spiff them up. The second is a panel from the storyboard

I knew a guy who lied with such ease, conviction and insistence, he made people around him doubt their perception of reality. Having no core identity, he settled for being a shapeshifter and playacting kayfabe illusions. Unfortunately, in the case of Trump, it’s global kayfabe and we are the marks.
