Not sure if the news has made it out to the broader world, but we had a (confirmed!) tornado touchdown in Columbus earlier this week along with straight line wind damage from 100mph winds. Some will be without power until this weekend because the power lines are just gone.

Ohio...

The National Weather Service office in Wilmington, OH conducted a
storm damage survey with Franklin County Ohio Emergency
Management. This survey evaluated storm damage from severe
thunderstorms that moved across the area during the morning of
Tuesday, August 11.

The survey team evaluated damage in Upper Arlington, particularly
around Upper Arlington High School and along Zollinger Road. Some
of the worst tree damage was observed just east of Upper
Arlington High School along Mount Holyoke Road, Wellesley Drive,
Halstead Road, Pickwick Drive and N Star Road. There were no
visible signs of a tornadic circulation or a covergent pattern and
therefore the survey team determined that damage in Upper
Arlington was a result of straight line winds that were 90 to 100
mph.

The survey team also evaluated damage in south Columbus,
particularly from E Hinman Avenue eastward across Parsons Avenue,
impacting Barack Park, and extending as far east as Fairwood
Avenue. The damage in this area exhibited a convergent pattern. In
addition to tree damage, there was structural damage that included
roof damage to some homes and businesses. This tornado reached
EF1 intensity.

A final assessment related to the tornado, including more detailed
results of the survey, are expected to be completed and
transmitted via a Public Information Statement in the coming days.

(April 7, 2026) – The Artemis II crew – (clockwise from left) Mission Specialist Christina Koch, Mission Specialist Jeremy Hansen, Commander Reid Wiseman, and Pilot Victor Glover – take time out for a group hug inside the Orion spacecraft on their way home. Following a swing around the far side of the Moon on April 6, 2026, the crew exited the lunar sphere of influence (the point at which the Moon's gravity has a stronger pull on Orion than the Earth's) on April 7, and are headed back to Earth for a splashdown in the Pacific Ocean on April 10. The crew was selected in April 2023, and have been training together for their mission for the past three years.

From NASA: art002e009285 (April 6, 2026) – Our planet draws closer to passing behind the Moon in this image captured by the Artemis II crew during their lunar flyby, about six minutes before Earthset. Earth is in a crescent phase, with sunlight coming from the right. The dark portion of Earth is experiencing nighttime. On Earth’s day side, swirling clouds are visible over muted blue in the Australia and Oceania region. The lines of small indentations on the Moon’s rugged surface are secondary crater chains. These structures are formed by material ejected during a violent primary impact.

The right portion of the image shows the transition from smooth material within an inner ring of mountains to more rugged terrain around the rim. Vavilov and other craters and their ejecta are accentuated by long shadows at the terminator, the boundary between lunar day and night. The image was captured with a handheld camera at a focal length of 400 mm, as the crew flew around the far side of the Moon.

This was the first use of eclipse glasses at the Moon to safely view a solar eclipse.

Moon!!!!!! (with bonus Venus!!!!!)

From NASA: art002e009298 (April 6, 2026) – A close-up view from the Orion spacecraft during the Artemis II crew’s lunar flyby on April 6, 2026, captures a total solar eclipse, with only part of the Moon visible in the frame as it fully obscures the Sun. Although the full lunar disk extends beyond the image, the Sun’s faint corona remains visible as a soft halo of light around the Moon’s edge. From this deep-space vantage point, the Moon appeared large enough to sustain nearly 54 minutes of totality, far longer than total solar eclipses typically seen from Earth. This cropped perspective emphasizes the scale of the alignment and reveals subtle structure in the corona during the rare, extended eclipse observed by the crew. The bright silver glint on the left edge of the image is the planet Venus. The round, dark gray feature visible along the Moon’s horizon between the 9 and 10 o’clock positions is Mare Crisium, a feature visible from Earth. We see faint lunar features because light reflected off of Earth provides a source of illumination.

THIS IS NOT A DRILL! Oliver is using the bed I bought him as a birthday present!!!!! It took less than 48 hours for him to warm up to it 🥹🥹 He looks so baby all snuggled up. Hard to believe he turns 7 tomorrow!
