#PretendPanel I can write pretty much anywhere; I love being outdoors when possible. Good views, fresh air, birdsong, uncluttered space & away from distractions. On the computer: switching between apps, devices & printout helps me spot errors and can be like using fresh eyes each time I change.

One of my favourite ‘offices’: a picnic table on a green. Favourite notebook, pens, water bottle and bag in view. The sun is shining.

Clare glanced at Janice. "You've got a weird expression on your face."

"With a goofy smile," interjected Zoe.

"What's on your mind?" said Clare.

"Oh... Nothing much," said Janice. "only that sometimes Ollie says things I didn't know I'd been thinking." Her smile widened into something close to a full-blown grin and her eyes twinkled. "Until this moment, I didn't know how much I want an asexual Saint Nicola on top of my Christmas three this year."

A lone anti-pride protester as the parade took place. Not a great photo, but a sign of our times and reminder of why pride and awareness raising are needed.

Some endings don’t need romance, hearts, or flowers to be happy.

Academic Clare is in a rut. She is in her forties, her job is stressful, and she feels worn down by the personalities and politics in the university department where she works. She has also just broken up with her latest boyfriend.

During one of their regular get-togethers, Clare’s oldest friend shows Clare a newspaper article, pushing her into an exploration of what it means to be asexual.

As Clare figures things out, she meets homoromantic couple, Tristan and Matt, nonbinary Ollie, student Jack, aromantic Janice, and Matt’s cousin, Natalia.

Follow Clare and her new friends through a series of misadventures as they road trip, take part in Pride, suffer a series of misunderstandings, and forge new relationships.

#pretendpanel #writingcommunity A longtime fan, I went to a Dick Francis book signing. Everyone ahead of me bought books as presents, asking for them to be dedicated to Great Aunt Flo who was in hospital etc. When asked who my book was for, I bashfully said, “Me.” Mr Francis looked delighted.

Favourite pen & notebook. Favourite picnic table, view & time of year. Warblers are warbling and lambs are bleating. It’s a warm, late afternoon—a perfect time to be jotting down notes which might one day morph into a story. Anyone else have favourite places to write? #writingcommunity

Happy #InternationalAsexualityDay to my fellow aces! The ace community has brought me friendship, solidarity, inner peace (because it has dispelled the notion of being broken)… I’ve been places I never expected to go & marched at Prides. I’ve even written books with ace MCs. Feeling grateful.

My stories’ settings are often inspired by places I know & love. Here’s a picture from a walk I took today. This place hasn’t appeared in a story yet, but it’s probably only a matter of time. How many others draw on the landscape for inspiration? Thnx, Hiria, for #pretendpanel. It’s fun!

#pretendpanel The first I can remember was Michael Strogoff (Jules Verne), which I devoured as a teen. Rollicking adventure with lots of angst. Unfortunately, I was gutted by a twist at the end, which undermined so much of what had gone before. Would top my all time fave list if not for that.

#AskAnAuthor Writing is one way I unwind from my day job. But other ways to unwind and avoid my WIP include fibre arts (knitting, spinning) and enjoying the local wildlife and scenery. Last Christmas, I resolved to learn to crochet and I’m hooked!
