What was my highlight of Gen Con? 700 people playing my game, Honeypot, at the same time at AEG's Big Game Night!
This is what 700 playing the game you designed looks like! So many people playing Honeypot. What a crazy moment for me at AEG's Big Game Night at Gen Con!
I'll be at th AEG booth at 3pm today (Friday) signing copies of Honeypot if you want to stop by and say hi at Gen Con!
My game, Honeypot, is debuting at Gen Con next week! Come check it out! I'll be working at the Flatout Games booth (#403) 4 hours each day. Honeypot will also be one of the featured games at the AEG Big Game Night where 700+ people will get a chance to play it for the first time!
My #bgstats for May! My youngest, Zoe (4yo), has taken an interest in board games so we've been playing more games like Hot Streak, Illusion, Cascadia Junior, Art Robbery, and Durian!
Sourcing parts for a new indie market game I'm working on! We out here min-maxing how many legos we can fit into a fixed price box.
I keep forgetting to post these, but we had another great playtesting night yesterday! It's awesome to see new faces join as well.
Frenzy Falls is available in stores now! @rf-seattle.bsky.social and I co-designed this one. It's a quick and simple game for up to 6 players so I've found it quite easy to get it to the table!
Got to play Pirate of the High Teas from @pinkhawkgames.bsky.social last week! It's a mix of set collection, card drafting, & worker placement that all work seamlessly in a lightweight streamlined game. The variety of foods and their art is absolutely top notch. I'm hungry just thinking about it.
Venture Angels: Secretly bid on startup projects to try to win them. However be careful, if a project gets overhyped then it gets discarded. Fairly elegant design involving hidden bidding & a scoring system that helps reveal players' intentions. ⭐⭐
Slambo: Fun light card shedder. Play cards & add numbers, but try to stay within a narrow range or you lose! As your hand size dwindles, you get closer to victory but your options become fewer. Fun to yell out the card names as you play them. ⭐⭐
Power Vacuum: Trick taker where the twist is you have a hidden agenda to move power to specific factions. Playing lowest # in a trick lets you manipulate power. Revealing your agenda early scores you more points. Backs of cards show suits, but not sure the game needed it. Overall liked it. ⭐⭐
Off with their Heads: Trick taking "roll & write". Depending on how you placed on the trick, you can fill in different areas. Balancing what area, what number you want to play/fill, and timing your cards to the ever-shifting suit ranks makes this game fun. Simple rules but rewards planning. ⭐⭐⭐
Nawalli: Summon Nawals, cast spells, score points across 4 lanes of battle. Each Nawal has abilities that interact in different cool combinations. Once the game gets going there are interesting decisions. But the drafting, sorting of cards, and setup make this less likely to make it to the table. ⭐
Monkey Palace: Collect bricks, earn points while one-upping previous players to build an increasingly taller structure. Gameplay is fun & straight forward. Market seemed more elaborate than necessary. Hard to tell if you're doing well or not. Table presence is super cool. ⭐⭐
Floriferous: Set collection card drafting played across 3 rounds. Each round you can see what cards are available to draft & can plan ahead. Taking a card higher up on a column gives you higher priority to choose a card for the next column. Drafting mechanism is cool, set collection felt sparse. ⭐⭐
Emberheart: Worker placement game where the amount of workers you dedicate gives you priority treatment on those spaces. Collect dragons, habitats, and hire heroes. Beautiful art. Specialized workers & priority placement is novel. Wish there was more of an engine, but many cool things still. ⭐⭐
Corinth: Roll & Write where you draft dice. Some fun elements include letting the active player have extra dice. Very elegant & streamlined design. Less combo-y than other R&Ws but still satisfying and easy to teach. Maybe too simple for a lot of repeat plays but still solid. ⭐⭐⭐
A Fake Artist Goes to New York: Players take turns drawing one line into a collaborate piece of art. However, 1 player doesn't know what they are supposedly drawing! Artists must prove they know what the subject is without giving it away to the one fake artist. Lot of fun banter and debate. ⭐⭐⭐
Hot Streak: Bet on which mascot will cross the finish line first! Randomly selected deck dictates how mascots move. Cards are initially known but players inject cards & cards get removed. Once the race starts, there's nothing to do but watch, cheer, and feel the emotional roller coaster! ⭐⭐⭐
Art Robbery: Delightfully snappy game where you steal points chips from the pool & other players. Play card, steal that chip, draw card. But also make sure you collect enough alibis or you can't win. Time the end of the round to exit with as many points as possible. Staple in my collection now. ⭐⭐⭐
Another round of #microreviews of new-to-me games I've played recently! Here's how the ratings work: ⭐: Would rather not play again ⭐⭐: Wouldn't mind playing again ⭐⭐⭐: Would actively seek to play again
Another great night of playtesting at Mox Boarding House in Seattle. The game designers here are always creating something cool!
February was a quieter month for games. However I got to introduce my 9yo son to older games in my collection like The Fox in the Forest. Also starting to ease my 4yo daughter in with games like Dragon's Breath! #bgstats
Here's a sampling of games I got played in January. Played 61 different games since I went to OrcaCon and a weekend board game retreat! What games on this grid have you played and what was your experience?
Look the game I scored at the thrift store today! I've always wanted A Fake Artist Goes to New York and at $1.99 it was a no-brainer. What's your best thrift store find?
One of my favorite things to do is keep old prototypes and visually capture how the cards have evolved over time until the final product! These are some of the cards for Honeypot, my new "I stack, you choose" game that is going live on Kickstarter in February. www.kickstarter.com/projects/fla...
Hey content creators, let me know if you're looking for a guest for your podcast or show! I'm looking to put myself out there more this year now that I'm more actively designing, developing, and even *gasp* playing games this past year. (Here's a photo of me in a recording studio from years ago)
