Football Fanzine Culture
@fanzinefc
Blogs from www.Footballfanzineculture.blog looking at the history & culture of football fanzines with occasional pieces about individuals and teams related to that.
PLUS...even better news for northerners..If you missed the Voice of the Fans exhibition last year, here's another chance to see some of the panels. They are on the 3rd floor at Leeds Central Library, on display until the autumn. bsky.app/profile/vfta...
Last ever e-edition of an absolute classic, get your copy here. www.facebook.com/share/p/14hN...
There’s a great James Trafford stat on google just now. Any fanzine would be proud of this one.
When you think you’ve seen a copy of every fanzine then the post arrives. That.
@rafnicholson.bsky.social hi Raf, Pete here from last night’s Scottish history meeting. Sorry I was vague but I didn’t know at the time how much Rach/Yorks were wanting to say at present. Anyway more or less at the same time Rach posted this, it’s sad& bad news. www.instagram.com/p/DaQf4k3DSK...
Of course you all realise that the real World Cup starts today.
Just watching my daughter being interviewed on the telly about playing at the cricket World Cup. HBU?
From The Johnny Flood Experience fanzine some time late 1992...Gordon will probably feature in a "Fat Git XI" blog sometime soon.
No, you’ve just taken delivery of 7 fantastic junior Scottish football fanzines. The “voyages of discovery” groundhopping features alone in these make them worth seeking out.
Remarkably tonight marks the beginning of another new print fanzine. The Finn Park Tone supporting Finn Harps is now added to the list (now at 1,815 and climbing) Another replacement for a programme. Go n-éirí leat!
Another day, another brilliant selection of fanzines arrives in the post. However I have to say the extra care and affection shown in shipping the Hanging on the Telephone zine really touched me. Probably to protect that well known shrinking violet Neil Warnock on the cover.
Finally there is a tremendous piece on how upscale and fancy schmancy the hospitality scene was at Brisbane road in the 80s. Great stuff.
There is a fantastically basic map of where the fanzine is sold. If you’ve already bought it you’d know this and if you haven’t bought it, well….It’s the thought that counts I suppose.
I love a good feud. Tbh it all seems a bit tame as they do freely admit that “predicted” line ups is a bit of a fallible feature, they don’t even name subs FFS. I am now desperate to get a copy of the Wagon Train fanzine in question!!
So to the editorial and there is hint of a FEUD. The ads give yet more proof that the web isn’t a good place to put stuff vs print, web-orient.clara.net no longer exists (but there is loads of stuff about clarinets if your spelling is dodgy)
If I were a real dweeb I’d start looking for ACTUAL line ups for the game to see how they did (more on this later but Orient won 1-0 in front of 3,908). V good for Orient, less so for Chester. thanks to the superb theoszone.com
Cheery O’s USP seems to have been an alternative programme at a very cheap price (and very little content) plus NO STAPLES..and a PREDICTED line up on the back cover.
Today’s #FanzineoftheDay is Cheery O’s issue 8 from November 97 for the match vs Chester City. Does issue 8 mean ever or just that season? (it was the 11th home game!!) The sort of thing that drives you MAD when you are cataloguing. Great name though
2 wickets in 2 balls including a run out off your own bowling to seal a place at the World Cup then, lovely stuff.
Finally, the signing is revealed and despite the bizarre sight of Watford boss Graham Taylor with the now renamed Basset Girls it's pretty disappointing, as is the cut of that jacket. You wouldn't want to argue with Mel Sterland though.
Bertie Bassett, The Save the Children Parachutists and Miss Sheffield Wednesday Jackie Stocks can't hide that bloody lovely floodlight pylon #FloodlightFriday.
As a reminder of how shit watching football could be in the 80's there is news and an artist's impression that the Kop at Hillsborough is to finally get a roof. 16,850 standing..just under half of the TOTAL capacity today. the 'crush barriers omitted' note hits very hard.
Another entry for #floodlightfriday appears on page 10 with Mick Lyons 'Great' and 'Super' goal vs Chelsea. (Did Jim Bowen write this?) Plus, there is a "ready made' 10% discount on your ready mix concrete Owl readers.
Inside the front cover we find no floodlight but there is another signing teaser and that the ladies on the front page are the 'Sheffield Wednesday Personality Girls' This is PEAK 1985 fare. Contact Barry Lee for more details
A confession, I bought this because I loved the Bertie Bassett/ floodlight cover and I didn't have my readers on and mistook Official for UNofficial on the cover. It isn't a fanzine but nonetheless it is a BRILLIANT source for #floodlightfriday
For a moment there as I opened the box I thought I’d gone too far this time…
