Magnus Hirschfeld was Jewish and gay. By attacking the Institut für Sexualwissenschaft, Nazis were specifically targeting the "and gay" of it. Several trans people lived and worked there.

If you find yourself saying, "I don't need to know about it to have an opinion," remember that opinions are like assholes.

to learn anything entails the fact that there is no way to escape learning that you were formerly ignorant, to learn that you were a fool, that you have already lost irretrievable opportunities, that you have made wrong choices, that you were silly and limited. These lessons are not pleasant. The acquisition of knowledge— especially when we are young— again and again includes this experience. Older children tease us for what we don't know. Teachers condescend to us as they instruct us. (Long ago, they beat us for forgetting.) In the school yard we overheard the third graders talking about how dumb the first graders are. When we reach the third grade, we ourselves contribute to such discussions. Thus most people soon actively desire to stay clear of the whole process, because by the time we are seven or eight we know exactly what the repercussions and reactions will be. One moves toward knowledge through a gauntlet of inescapable insults— the most painful among them often self-tendered. The Enlightenment notion (that, indeed, knowledge also brings "enlightenment" — that there is an "upside" to learning as well: that knowledge itself is both happiness and power) tries to suppress that downside. But few people are fooled. Reminders of the downside of the process in stories such as that of Adam and Eve can make us—some of us, some of the time, because we are children of the Enlightenment who have inevitably, successfully, necessarily, been taken in— weep.

We say we are weeping for lost innocence. More truthfully, we are weeping for the lost pleasure of unchallenged ignorance.

While Trump and his aides speak publicly about the alleged threat of noncitizen voting, in court the Justice Department seeks to minimize the extent of the actions the federal government has taken to carry out the executive order, Becker indicated.

“So I think this is a case of the government trying to have it both ways,” Becker said. “The government is trying to satisfy an audience of one, the president, while at the same time trying to play this rope-a-dope game with the court so that the court might not rule against them, they might say that a case isn’t ripe yet.”

In response to questions from States Newsroom, Homeland Security said in an unattributed statement that U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, an agency within DHS, is “lawfully implementing” the executive order.

“President Trump has been clear: Nothing is more fundamental than the integrity and security of our elections,” the statement said.
Quest for voter rolls

The Trump administration has spent the past year attempting to obtain unredacted state voter rolls to feed into a powerful Homeland Security computer program that can identify potential noncitizen voters. The Justice Department has filed more than 30 lawsuits seeking to force states and the District of Columbia to turn over the information, but so far none have been successful.

Eight states — including heavily Democratic California, Oregon and Washington — have all-mail elections, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures. For those states, complying with the executive order would effectively mean turning over the names of all or nearly all their voters to the Postal Service.

When Ali Khamenei’s generation confronted the world—in hostage negotiations, nuclear talks, regional confrontations—there was always an undercurrent of grievance, a voice rising in the rhetoric of historical injustice and Islamic vindication. It was powerful and real, but a strategic liability. It made them predictable, defensive, and prone to conflating the defense of their ideology with the defense of Iran’s national interests, which did not always neatly align.

The new generation has separated revolution from statecraft. At home and abroad, it neither espouses revolutionary grandiosity nor advocates revolutionary activism. The new leaders are establishment actors: pragmatic, hardened nationalists operating with a clear-eyed assessment of Iran’s capabilities and vulnerabilities. Unlike their predecessors, they can exercise strategic patience and act decisively. They look at Iran’s weaknesses frequently and publicly—something the founding generation was too insecure to do honestly—and they treat them as problems to be solved. That instinct drove the changes Tehran made between the two wars.

“There are no US service members involved in combat operations or hostilities in Lebanon,” said House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, Democratic Whip Katherine Clark, and Democratic Caucus Chair Pete Aguilar, ahead of the vote, according to CBS. "We stand with the Lebanese people, the government of Lebanon and the Lebanese Armed Forces in their efforts to live peacefully and defeat Hezbollah.”

Jeffries reportedly added that they would support an alternative proposal that would maintain US and Lebanese coordination against Hezbollah.

I rushed to ICE detention center Delaney Hall yesterday when I heard detainees began a hunger strike. Here’s what I saw:
-18 yr old high school student crying and saying she just wanted to graduate senior year
-Pregnant woman unable to get full OBGYN medical support
-Woman who had a miscarriage in the detention facility and left to manage all on her own
-Mom not allowed to spend more that a few minutes with 4 month old baby
-Husband of American citizen wife and kid
-A carton with the milk inside congealed solid (expiration date is tomorrow)
-Man there for nearly a year with no movement in his legal efforts
-A document showing next Tuesday’s court docket showing 74 cases before 1 judge in one day (averages about 5 min a case)
-man telling me ICE trying to deport him to DRC where there is active Ebola outbreak (he’s from South America originally)
-Numerous people who were arrested at scheduled interviews for green cards (trying to follow the formal process)
-Family unable to find out what hospital their family was sent to (ICE said they cannot give any medical updates to families of hospitalized detainees)
-The Statue of Liberty as I left the facility to drive home.
Treat humans as human. Spending tens of billions of dollars from American families to perpetrate cruelty against people who aren’t violent criminals or felons is a waste of money and wrong. Let’s stand against Trump and Republicans in Congress from passing this reconciliation bill to give ICE tens of billions more in the coming weeks. Our government should focus on helping Americans afford their lives, not lock people up in for-profit detention centers where corporations like GeoGroup and CoreCivic make $billions. No profiting off of human misery.
