The reason bad writers want to use AI is that they think the most important part of writing is the writing. The ideas, the plotting, the twist, the actual typing, whatever. But that's not writing. That's process. Writing is taste. It's style. It's voice. It's knowing when to stop and when to keep going. AI can't have taste, it can't have style. It can pretend, maybe well enough to fool a bad writer, but it can't do the thing that real writing does – which is tap into its own humanity and experience and emotion and express all that process in a pure and unique form. That's writing. It's not generating words anymore than singing is making notes. Real writing, good writing is the offering of a life lived.

In a nice bit of surprise yesterday, the film me and some pals made a while back won an award from the Writers Guild of Canada and I got very distracted because I saw Jacob Tierney as I walked up and as a result I have no memory of what I said.
