Once upon a time, there was a War…

Ainsel just wants to be left alone to have a quiet life, as she closes the dangerous Fae breaches without any tools, training, or backup; after all, no-one else can do it.

Rowan lives life as she wants, loud and free of responsibilities, as she tries to close breaches with a can-do attitude and more explosives than any one person should have; after all, no-one else is doing it.

Neither of them want to have to go on the run together, as forces older than humanity and more wrathful than god bear down upon them for reasons beyond their understanding.

Tempers clash, an old enemy stirs, and secrets kept close to the bone threaten to erupt and put everything at risk…

Besides, there was something nice about pulling off the road into a field and hearing the roar of traffic die as the trees muffled all sound, and Rowan didn’t see why they couldn’t just keep doing that. Sure, March was a cold time of the year to be camping, but it was the kind of thing that built character!
Rowan wasn’t particularly surprised that Ainsel kept on at her to stay on the roads, and just check into motels along the way; from what little she’d seen of her cottage (all chocolate box thatch and soft furnishings inside), Ainsel had seemed the sort of girl who played pretend at being rural and outdoors-y, without any of the actual enthusiasm for it. The first time the subject had been broached, Rowan had asked (very reasonably, in her view) why they couldn’t just save money with the camping, but Ainsel had responded by clamming up, and acting incredibly grumpy the whole time they’d set up the tent, and long into the evening, to boot.

'It’s probably not what you think.' She slid her hand back into her pocket. 'You didn’t bring it with you, it’s in the locked tin, so it’s something else and your brain is playing tr—' As her hand took hold of it and drew it out of her pocket, the hollow pit in her stomach opened into a yawning chasm of dread.

Clutched in her hand, making her fingers looks clumsy and huge just by proximity, lay a tiny embroidery-sized skein of thread, so slim and fine that when unwound, couldn’t be seen at all unless the sun hit it just right.

“Don’t just stand there, Karl!” Marie had already shucked her backpack and trousers, her pale legs shockingly white against the deep greens and browns of the bog. He followed suit, dropping his backpack and pulling his shirt over his head as he eyed up the woman. She didn’t look too deep; hopefully he and Marie could human chain her back out to solid ground.

“Help her first, then the horse if we can?” He muttered, bending down next to her as he pulled off shoes and socks. Marie shook her head slightly.

“There’s no saving the horse, it’s in too deep and we don’t know how long it’s been there. By the looks of them both, too long; if we’d gotten to them at the moment they fell in, maybe we’d have a chance of saving them both, but now…” she trailed off, and Karl nodded sadly. He didn’t like it any more than she did, but she was the farmer, the vet, the impromptu doctor; he didn’t argue.

The mystery woman was not so gracious.

The fairy returned the child exactly as promised: two strong little legs, kicking the blanket away; two little fists, balled up and waving around, corn dolly tightly clutched in one; glittering smile under rosie-apple cheeks, laughing at some secret. A beautiful, healthy, baby, returned as promised.

Such a shame the parents were long in their graves.

It's currently 30° in my room and tomorrow and Thursday are... well. You have my sympathies, it is truly shit.

A snip of the weather for my area from the Met Office Website; it's shows the temperatures for today as 33 degrees Celsius during the day and 20 at night; temperature for Wednesday is 36 during the day and 20 at night; temperature for Thursday will be 37 during the day and 22 at night, and Friday will be 33 during the day and 16 at night.

This fucking creature, i swear. The two cat beds i painstakingly crocheted? Nope. Not interested. My in-progress ace pride blanket, folded on the edge of an otherwise completely empty king size bed? Perfect. I'm clearly never getting this back.

A small black cat curled up contentedly on a folded crochet blanket with visible ace pride (black, grey, white, purple) stripes. The blanket has a lot of loose ends that need to be sewn in. Don't judge me for not weaving in as I go.

Ainsel resisted the urge to lick her bloodied lips. “I name you: Grimnir! I name you: Warg! I name you: Black Shuck!" As the words left her mouth she felt the blood on her lips sizzle and boil, and the great body of the hound shivered with every name as if struck. "Now: heel."

The thing whined, the sound like steel being mangled. Slowly, unwillingly, it left the semi-conscious Rowan. Tail firmly between its legs, ears pinned back, it trudged over to where Ainsel stood, clutching the shotgun. Obediently, it stopped right before her, and sat.

"Good boy," Ainsel said wearily, and shot it in the face.

TODAY'S QUESTION:

What makes your work difficult to categorize or undefined?

[My response from my tumblr bloh, fenrir-kin, reads]:

It's about the Fae, so it's Fantasy.

The setting is something recognisable as modern-day UK, so it's Urban Fantasy.

The setting is also 300 years in the future, so it's Sci-Fi.

It follows a devestating world-wide war that nearly wiped out humanity, so it's Post-apocalyptic.

But because it's been so long since the end of the War, humanity has mostly recovered and even made advances in certain aspects of life, so it's Hopepunk.

The Fae are magical but also nightmarish and eldritch, so it's Horror.

Two of the main characters fall for each other over the course of the trilogy, so it's Sapphic Romance.

Most of the cast is queer, so it's LGBTQ+.

And finally: it's written by someone who is usually perceived as a woman, so if it makes it through Trad Pub, it'll probably get branded as YA.

“Is there a safety, or-”

“Nah, but the slides can be stiff. Try with your other hand? It’ll feel a bit weird, mind.” This time, Rowan could see the slight shift of the slide, but Ainsel couldn’t quite get it to slide all the way home.

“How the hell did you make it look so easy? This thing feels heavier than me!” Rowan plucked the gun out of her grasp and racked it easily, then disarmed it and handed it back to Ainsel, trying to make her grin as smug as possible. As the blonde took the offered weapon, Rowan stepped in, wrapped an arm around Ainsel’s waist, and lifted her easily. “Wha- put me down!”

“You know what,” Rowan said as she lowered her to the floor again, “I think you’re right; that shotgun slide mechanism is heavier than you. How d’ye keep from floating away? Rocks in your shoes?” Ainsel glared at her, and pointedly took three steps back, out of arms reach. Ah right; humourless.

Where was Antok…?

If that thing had smashed the binoculars, Antok’s prognosis wasn’t good.

His mind raced, and he became painfully aware of the awkward position he’d frozen in, as he felt a cramp threaten to drag along the back of his calf.

Call it in. You need to call it in. The rational part of his brain screamed at him as he stood there, ignoring the frigid drops of rain that trickled their way down the back of his neck. It’s happening again; call it in!

The thing stretched languidly, and in the flickering breach-light, Gatesman Fields watched as an unmistakable crimson stain was sluiced off the thing’s blades by the rain.

Oh.

He wondered who was going to give the news to Antok’s husband.

“Too late,” she whispered. Rowan turned, following her arm, and felt the blood freeze in her veins as three truly enormous dogs emerged from the tree-line ahead of them.

“Oh, fu-” she started, not bothering to keep her voice down, and felt the woman’s hand grab hers and yank her back around, pulling her away from the breach - but away from the trees as well. Rowan looked over her shoulder as she adjusted her stride; the dogs either hadn’t spotted them yet, or weren’t worried about them; they were making their way up to the breach, sure, but they were doing it in that very dog-like way, where their paths took them all over the place as they had to sniff at absolutely everything.

She’d have found it endearing if they weren’t the size of draft horses.

“What have you got there?” She finally gave into her curiosity, and was rewarded with one raised eyebrow as the woman opened the case to an assortment of tubes and wires. “Will it help you close the breach?” This time, the stranger grinned as she picked up and slotted the tubes and wires together with ease, and Ainsel’s heart skipped again; that grin was full of feral, barely-constrained energy.
“Only one way to find out!” the redhead said cheerily, all professional mystique gone, and stood, hefting something large and unwieldy onto her shoulder. “Might want to cover your ears.”
“Wh-” Ainsel started to ask, just as the woman pulled the trigger, and something distinctly rocket-like left the device at high speed, streaking unerringly towards the breach.
