A billboard truck drove through Melbourne's CBD on Friday night bearing the slogan 'Ditch the Witch' alongside an image of Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan in a witch's hat.

I want to be clear about what that is - and what it isn't.

It isn't policy critique. It isn't holding a leader to account. Those things are healthy democracy and I welcome robust debate.

This is sexism - attacking someone because of their gender, not their decisions. This is misogyny - 'witch' has been used for centuries to dismiss and silence women who hold power.

Some will say men get attacked too - and they do. But attacks on women in leadership are categorically different. They don't just target performance - they target appearance, identity, gender itself. They're designed to say women don't belong. There is no male equivalent of being called a witch.

And the evidence shows what this kind of culture costs us.

The VLGA's Victorian Councillor Census found 41% of women councillors regularly experience threatening or intimidating behaviour - compared to 26% of men - and that bullying and harassment are key reasons women don't stand for re-election.

The eSafety Commissioner's research found 1 in 3 working women experience online abuse, and nearly a quarter say it makes them reluctant to move into leadership roles.

This isn't abstract. It is the reason women don't put their hand up. It is the reason we still have so far to go.

Our own Council's Gender Equity Plan is clear: when women and men aren't treated as equals, disrespect and discrimination follow. That billboard is exactly that.

I'm not making a political statement. I'm not aligned to any party and I'll criticise any policy on any side.

But Jacinta Allan is Bendigo's local MP - part of our community. And Greater Bendigo has committed, through our Gender Equity Coalition of more than 30 organisations, to a community where everyone is respected and safe to participate in public life.

Criticise the decisions. Question the policies. But have some basic respect for the person.
