Hair oil on lengths, trim off split ends ASAP (I did search-and-destroy to avoid losing length), protect it when you sleep (french braid worked for me), no bleach. Also dry it quickly and avoid handling too much when wet, as more prone to breakage. I have short hair now but it used to be long:
