A solitary sailboat glides across a sapphire sea, its two figures silhouetted against the bright sky. The application of color, in broad, unmodulated strokes compresses planes and imbues the scene with an immediate, almost tactile presence. These flattened perspectives fracturing the familiar architecture of the South of France, speak to the post-war era's re-evaluation of representation. Sharp diagonals slash across the lower half, delineating cultivated plots bursting with patterned foliage. The dense foliage of a palm tree emerges on the right, its fronds reaching towards the intensely blue sky. The dreamlike images attracted author Ernest Hemingway, the painting’s first owner, and did much to inspire the surrealist movement a few years later. The Farm was created during a pivotal period in art history, bridging the gap between Cubism and Surrealism. While Miró had experimented with Cubist principles, The Farm marks a departure towards a more personal and symbolic language. The Kinsey family, Bernard, Shirley and their son Khalil, are the subiects in Dunson's portrait.

One of Neiman's first forays into art was creating posters for local merchants at a young age to advertise their store sales. Later, as an established artist, he often made posters to commemorate and promote special sporting and cultural events. Neiman’s posters remain a tribute to his vibrant work and life.

Neiman painted every type of sporting event during his lifetime, with his influence earning him the title of “Father of Contemporary Sport Art.” As the official artist of five Olympics, his art reached millions of people via al fresco paintings of the competitions. His comprehensive coverage of other sporting events includes the Super Bowl, the World Series, the Kentucky Derby, championship boxing, PGA and The Masters golf tournament, and the Tour de France.

In May 1890 van Gogh left the asylum at Saint-Rémy for Auvers-sur-Oise, a small village north of Paris which he described as "Edenic.' On July 27 he shot himself, dying two days later. The myth of the suffering artist, whose madness enabled him to transcend the limitations of art, has colored perceptions of him ever since. Van Gogh himself noted that bouts of madness only spurred him to work during his periods of sanity; during his final months at Auvers he painted nearly one canvas a day.

In a letter to his younger brother, Theo, dated June 30, 1890, van Gogh explained the structure and brilliant colors of "Undergrowth with Two Figures'": "The trunks of the violet poplars cross the landscape perpendicularly like columns," adding "the depth of Sous Bois is blue, and under the big trunks the grass blooms with flowers in white, rose, yellow, and green." Concealed amid the lush carpet of grass and flowers and a proliferation of slender tree trunks, two lovers reiterate the theme of nature's fecundity.

"Undergrowth with Two Figures" has a silvery tonality characteristic of van Gogh's works from Auvers. His brushwork may be swift and visceral, his colors strong and biting, his emotion raw and visible, but the composition reveals no hint of psychological torment. It is painted on a double square canvas, twice as wide as it is high. Van Gogh explored the artistic possibilities of this panoramic format in several of his last paintings.

Tommaso Rangone, “grand guardian” of the Scuola di San Marco in Venice, commissioned Tintoretto in 1562 to paint a cycle depicting episodes associated with the saint, which the artist had completed by 1566. The cycle of large canvases, one of which this is one, recounted not only the saint’s life but also miracles in which he is alleged to have had a hand. This painting shows the moment when, as the Venetians are busy removing corpses from tombs in their search for Saint Mark’s body, the saint appears to them and imperiously commands them to stop because his body has already been removed from the tomb at the end of the room and is lying at their feet. The presence of a man possessed by devils on the right of the composition adds to the miraculous tone of the episode, which is being observed by the patron Rangone clad in attire befitting his rank. The artist, a skilled narrator, depicts the miracle as though it were taking place on a stage, forcing his “actors” to adopt theatrical and emphatic poses. The observer, or in this case the spectator, is drawn into the heart of the action by the dizzying foreshortening that impresses a profound acceleration on the picture’s spatial depth accentuated by the play of light on the arcades; the dark is split by flashes of light, underscoring the crucial elements in the story, emphasising the volume of the figures and amplifying the unnatural, ghostly pallor of the corpses.

This woman’s exquisite attire indicates her likely wealth and importance. Gold disks decorate the edge of her collar while rubies and emeralds adorn her hair. She wears an extravagant necklace with a large cut diamond and luxurious pearl. The fashion suggests the portrait was made in the 1570s. It is possibly a representation of Camilla Martelli, mistress and later second wife of the Grand Duke of Tuscany, Cosimo I de'Medici. Unlike other portraits depicting individuals who themselves may have collected art or created a studioli, or private studies, Camilla herself would not have had access to such a study room. However, the Medici family had one of the most celebrated studioli in all of Italy.

Scott, unlike some Orientalists, actually travelled to and lived in North Africa, aiming for a more authentic representation, though still filtered through a Western lens. The painting reflects the broader Victorian interest in different cultures and the growing accessibility of travel.

Critic Henry Tuckerman praised this imaginary landscape, inspired by Church's extensive travels:

"Athwart a mountain-bounded valley and gorge . . . the sunshine, beaming across the vapory vail, forms thereon a rainbow, which seems to clasp the whole with a prismatic bridge; a scene more characteristic of the season and the region it is difficult to imagine, and one more difficult to represent on canvas could not be selected. To combine the right perspective with the aqueous effects is a problem hard to solve; but Mr. Church has succeeded; the aerial perspective is exquisitely true—the floating vapor, the blue sky, the radiant iris—the brooding mists on the distant mountains, the rich vegetation of the foreground, and green, rugged, declivity and mule-path—water, air, cloud, hill, and vale—all wear the tearful glory of The Rainy Season in the Tropics."

This monumental painting by American Impressionist Childe Hassam depicts Fifth Avenue bedecked with dozens of American flags in celebration of Independence Day in 1916. The artist was a committed supporter of the Preparedness Movement, which advocated for a strengthened national defense after the outbreak of war in Europe in July 1914. Proponents of the cause staged parades in cities across the country for the next two vears. Witnessing one such parade in May 1916, Hassam commented: "...I looked up the Avenue and saw those wonderful flags waving, and I painted a series of flag pictures after that."

This is the second of Hassam's flag pictures. The full title of this painting conflates the annual July 4th celebration with the nationalistic fervor created by the Preparedness Movement.

In 1927 he had photographed the plant extensively, and he would go on to examine it in works in a number of mediums. While these works experiment with arrangements of hard–edged forms and shifting planes, they also make clear how innovative American industry was during these years, how it was generating a radically new American landscape and experience. Missing from Sheeler's images are the people who worked in the factory, perhaps reflecting an ambivalence about the country's shift toward the industrial.
