Spent an hour in my sunblocking cocoon watching my girl boogie board — it’s her favorite thing!
Majorly overplayed my garden this year, since I underplanted last year. Unfortunately it’s very hard to find stuff 😂
I’ve had a cute family of nuthatches this month, the scraggly fledglings have been making slightly off key “meep” noises in concert with the parents and I see them at the feeders. This may be one of the parents. Plus the usual House Finches.
A grateful Chestnut-Sided Chickadee thanks my daughter for refilling the birdseed 😂 *kisses* 🪶 @thebirdsnest.bsky.social
Garden work, muffin baking, and lots of soccer games to watch …. My idea of a nice holiday!
I saw a GOOD BIRD today! Yellow Breasted Chat! I have not seen one in many years. I heard it making all kinds of strange calls that I didn’t recognize, ran Merlin and it was confused for a moment and I realized why as soon as it finally said the species! And it posed in view! 🪶 Oregon, USA
We have Brandt’s, Pelagic and Double-Crested on the Oregon coast, I did a project in college where I monitored a Brandt’s nest colony, so I became pretty interested in them then. Saw my first Neotropics in San Diego this year!
Tree Swallow parent swooping in to feed an awkward fledgling 🪶 Ridgefield, WA USA
An unusually close encounter with a Blue-winged Teal for me today! What a lovely duck. Tualatin River NWR, Oregon, USA. 🪶
The end of my Minnesota and Wisconsin trip — headed back west now. I got 35 lifers, it was a really fantastic trip! And some cute mammals too 🪶
Third day of Minnesota birding, and I don’t care how bad my warbler photos are … I still got photos of new warblers!! I also nearly walked into a couple of very chill shorebirds before I saw them. Five more lifers today (not pictured - Broad. Winged Hawk, Black Throated Green Warbler 🪶
🪶 Scarlet Tanager, Blackpoll Warbler (!!), Grasshopper Sparrow, and the surprisingly awesome Great Crested Flycatcher. Shelburne NWR, Minnesota
Day 2 Minnesota birding - Shelburne National Wildlife Refuge …. The light was really poor, but I confirmed another 14 lifers! Baby Trumpeter Swans! @banditelli.org
An excellent first day of Minnesota birding, looking for warblers and whatever other lifers I can get. 13 new-to-me total species today! The best was this Blackburnian Warbler, with Indigo Bunting as a close second. I also enjoyed being “mewed” at by a Gray Catbird. 🪶
Steller’s Jay, making odd quiet noises to itself, as opposed to the usual screaming. Today in SE Portland OR 🪶
I recently visited the Puget Sound area on a weekend getaway with my daughter. We were going to look for Orcas but I did NOT expect to find them! These were right outside our hotel in Tacoma and hung out there for about 30 minutes! An absolutely amazing encounter.
