April of last year I got to see the herd of goats travelling down the Via Appia, which inspired this piece. I wondered just how they would have looked when the tombs were still standing 🐐🏛️🏺
The tombs, while not explicitly supposed to be any specific tombs on the Appia (I ran out of time to research!), are designed on the double story tombs from the nearby Via Latina.
July's illustration is a bucolic scene of the Via Appia with a herd of goats approaching the viewer. Tall ancient tombs flank each side of the road, and trees and grasses grow alongside them. The tombs seem derelict, hinting that this scene's setting is long after the height of Rome’s prosperity.
Even after having to take a few months off running, I’m back and faster than before!! So pleased ☺️

This month’s illustration is a centauress & maenad cavorting on a ‘millefleur’ backdrop. They are arm-in-arm, in a pose directly inspired by the Pompeian frescos of centaurs & nymphs at the Naples Archaeology Museum. 💐flowers are from Sappho’s frag 94, ‘violet tiaras, …rosebuds, dill & crocus…’
I’m not a morning person but I always make an exception for the North East coast in June 🌞 I’ve never seen the North Sea so calm
Absolute worst timing to get this blanket (🥵) but when it gets cooler I will be kept cozy by Apollo’s sunny warmth 🌞🐍🏺
*AI receiving a direct quote from Euripides Medea*, hmmm I recognise this is an Ancient Greek reference but surely this can’t be about a woman?! What random general can I attribute this to with no correlation whatsoever Another brilliant unwanted AI search result, and dare I say misogynistic too🙃
17k steps, 2 museum visits, and lots of waking with a massive backpack in UK Humid Heat™ later, I can confidently say the “Athletic T-shirt” style is indeed sports-friendly 😎🏺 Perhaps I can suggest it for your next Hadrians Wall hike, or even archaeology dig… www.redbubble.com/i/t-shirt/Ha...
I put my Hadrians wall illustrations onto a running shirt to educate everyone eating my dust 🏃♀️💨🏺
Scotland if tickets to Fife weren’t eleven great British pounds
The final scene of Virgil’s Aeneid, illustrated for the final edition of #SingOMuseZine 🧡 The first time I read the Aeneid I was v emotional at the end. It was so horrible but also poetic. It doesnt feel like the same rage that haunts The Iliad tho. It feels very… Roman? A cold and piercing rage.
Three guesses for what this scene is ⚔️🌿🏛️ I’ll be releasing the full illustration in the coming days! #ancientrome #singomusezine
Fellow ancient history artists look at this!! Fully funded artist oppurtunity working with North East archives about Hadrians Wall, hosted by @vindolandatrust.bsky.social 🏛️🌿 If I didn’t already work at an archive three days a week I’d be all over this www.vindolanda.com/2027-artist-...
May’s illo is of Antigone - but wait... not that Antigone! This is the Trojan princess Antigone. Who claimed she was more beautiful than Juno... and well... got turned into a stork Mays rewards are A6 prints of this piece, and a matching sticker of storks on a column drum!🦅 Patreon.com/flaroh
