when I first met Sean Cotter he looked like this (left) but then after translating a load of Cărtărescu, he looked like this (right) I like to thing this is what happens to translators when they're locked in
I've occasionally mentioned my ultra fundamentalist trad-cath great aunt on here. Well she made a surprise appearance on a documentary about Irish film censorship the other day. Here she is protesting Scorsese's Last Temptation of Christ
also funny to be so gung ho about m dashes without knowing how to type an m dash
all else aside I would rather walk into a jacuzzi of boiling rocks than hear about the opinions of "power LinkedIn posters"
Just hanging around in the end notes with all the cool kids @drnollid.bsky.social @tobiasvryan.bsky.social
confusing pseudonym anyway, always made me think of the guy in Black Books
Going to popularise a new trend of sitting on the kerb. We are calling it the “suburban man’s balcony” (for men of all genders naturally, I just think it sounds funnier that way)
When the internet dies I’m going to go back to posting nonsense in postcard form
I always joke that after Mein Kampf and the Third Reich this would be the title of the next Knaussgard
The new bishop Lucy park has what I can only describe as “monument to the victims of communism” vibes
Had to buy poems instead because I can’t afford wispy narratives that straddle the border between essay and auto-fiction
that works less well than it used to (to get the same results as before I have to click on tools and switch from "all results" to "verbatim": two extra clicks, but still better than the alternatives)
Qwant is similar, I get different garbage irrelevant results depending on which "region" is choose. Here there is no "no region" option (I thought the internet was supposed to be international?)
On Duck Duck Go Go, it assumes because I'm in Ireland (why though?) that I mean Meath or Maynooth. But if I change the region to "no region" I still get "maynooth" but if I change it to "US" I find it on the ninth hit. So I need to search every region individually to find what I asked for? Garbage
I first have to click away the "did you mean "may htet"? (a Burmese football player) but once I click on "Search instead for mayshtet" (why not search for that first?) I get the answer I want. The second hit is a source I trust and I learn that it's Mołczadź (polish name tho?) in Belarus
