My last finale drabble for this #wednesday100 and it struck me that this may be the last one, or at least the last one for a while 😭 I haven’t been very consistent with writing these but I appreciate everyone who came along for the ride 💜 (always open to drabble prompts if people have them)

He wakes her every morning, as sweetly as he did the morning they left the ridge, so she begins each day with tender gratitude, seeing his eyes alight with love for her.

It’s perfect, and days pass and he never wavers in this, and she finally asks why.

Only then a shadow crosses his face, which has lately reflected only a deep-seated peace.

“Ian told me, ye ken. Cannae bear the thought of ye waking beside me… remembering… So,” he cups her cheek in his palm, “I will wake first for the rest of our days, if ye dinnae mind.”

Another small moment post-finale as they make it home to the ridge for this #wednesday100 💜

She’s watchful of him, even as his heart continues its strong, steady beat, even as they make it home to the ridge, safe and sound. She cannot quell the panic in some corner of her heart whispering this is borrowed time, that the laws of nature will demand recompense.

But Jamie is ever in motion, reaching to enfold a near-collapsing Bree in his arms, even as his own balance wavers.

“You need your rest,” Claire says when they’re alone.

“I’ve had rest.” Jamie cups her face, kisses her tenderly, and she feels the promise of their future in his certainty.

Her eyes flutter open with the unexpected gasp beside her. She had laid down beside her love for the last time and thought that was it — she would go home to him, one last time.

But his eyes are open now too.

“Sassenach?” She dares not move or even breathe as his hand reaches up to gently touch her hair. It’s only when he holds a strand of it between them that she sees what he does — that it has gone completely white. Jamie’s lips tilt up into the softest smile as he asks, “How long have I been asleep?”

Happy birthday to my girl who definitely deserved better than being retconned and resurrected offscreen in the eleventh hour only to be a cog in a bungled and meaningless plot line. Faith will always belong to the fandom!

Jamie knew the weight of a miracle to be 9 pounds exactly, when Faith was a few months old and placed in his hands for the first time, small and pale and more delicate than anything he’d ever held before. So it was no small thing to see the sunrise starting its bloom on the horizon on the morning of her seventh birthday, to tread quietly into the room where Faith and Brianna slept, and to watch the steady rise and fall of her chest as she slumbered on. She’d hit a growth spurt of late, with a coltish look to her now — all sharp lines and long limbs — but Jamie didn’t think he’d ever be able to look at Faith without seeing the soft shape of her in Claire’s arms at the top of the stairs in Jared’s house, and remembering the sudden shock of hope that had coursed through him at the sight of her.

She still had his ruddy curls, his pointed ears, the same slant to her eyes as him, but more and more each day, she started to resemble Claire — her stubborn mouth or dazzling smile, depending on her mood, and an echo of the graceful lines of Claire’s face in her own. Blood of their blood and bone of their bone. Their precious wee lass.

Quietly, so as not to wake Brianna, he knelt beside Faith’s bed and brushed her cheek with the backs of his fingers. “A leannan? Wake up.”

Her eyes did open then, framed by her furrowed brows that were scrunched in sleepy confusion. “Da?”

“It’s yer birthday, m'annsachd. Come watch the sunrise wi’ me.”

HASHTAG NOT MY CLAIRE 😭😭😭 Because we weren’t inventing the Claire & Fergus dynamic in fic, we were simply pulling at the threads of it woven through canon and building on it!
