Fpl fail
@fplfail
Recovering American abroad. Arsenal, inveterate reader and list maker, movies, and other stuff. Was allegedly good at FPL once. My Letterboxd movie reviews: My book reviews on Goodreads:
First draft. Sure it will evolve as I get more info on the promoted sides but for right now fairly happy with it outside of lack of Arsenal coverage and wanting two United attackers for their opening fixtures.
Staying at a hotel with maybe 5-6 other guests, an hour away from civilization with massage chairs and unlimited caffeine. I don’t think I’ve ever had or will ever have more ideal conditions for an FPL launch than this.
Been doing a crazy amount of walking in this small town I’m visiting, convenience stores or anything else a good hour’s walk away. Been great hiking and visiting beaches but arms and legs pretty burnt so planned on shutting it down today. Until I found this gelato shop(!). Melon and blueberry 🫐 🍈
Obsession (2026) Hard to believe at times this was made by a 26 year old YouTube creator. It’s visually striking and the performances are over the top in a way you’d expect people in these situations to be. Looking forward to seeing where the director goes from here
8 Hours of Terror (1957) If you’re into judging prostitutes who sleep with black men, plastic baby stunt doubles, cartoonishly evil rich people, murderers with a heart of gold and Russian folk song singalongs, this is manna from heaven. Batshit crazy stuff from Suzuki, but in the best possible way
Inn of Evil (1971) Kobayashi Masaki is one of my favorite directors. This is a later one from him but still hits all of the humanist notes that make his films special. Also has a wonderful cast with Tatsuya Nakadai and his tortured Vietnam vet looking eyes as the lead.
What Made Her Do It? (1930) If you’re into silent Marxist films out of Japan in the late 20s and early 30s this is the one for you. It’s got it all, despicable rich people, sexism, tearing down religion, and a missing 5 minutes at the end we only read about but wow…I’d give almost anything to see.
Snow Trail (1947) Kurosawa screenplay starring Takashi Shimura and a debut performance from a young and devilishly handsome Toshiro Mifune. The cinematography is gorgeous and the performances are naturally top notch. It also has the best use of “My Old Kentucky Home” in Japanese film history
The Passenger (2026) I think I’m done with the “heavy things like a car crush my leg and I’m sprinting without pain 30 seconds later” genre of films. I’d like the MPAA to get on with making a suitable warning label reflecting this as soon as possible
The People Upstairs (2020) If you’ve ever had neighbors who are shall we say…overly amorous(?), then this is your jam. Javier Camara in particular is wonderful as the acerbic Julio who’s in a passive aggressive Cold War with his wife and his orgy loving neighbors
1) It’s an achievement of sorts to make John Candy not funny 2) Trippy aural aesthetic with a freaky little kid 3) 90 minute music video for people w/ the attention span of a goldfish 4) One of the best films I’ve seen this year. Don’t judge it by the awful cover #LetterboxdFriday #LastFourWatched
They Will Kill You (2026) Could be an age thing with me but this seems made for people who have difficulty sitting still for 90 minutes. It’s got some fun one liners but otherwise the dialogue is pretty clunky and it’s just one music video-esque set piece after another. Just didn’t vibe with it
1) The drone shots were pretty? 2) It was fine. Was hoping for more 3) 🎥 about horny 🇳🇴 kids and Nazi zombies was the highlight of the week 4)Turns out that even if John Candy is in your 🎥 , lecturing on American imperialism doesn’t make a great comedy #filmsky #letterboxdfriday #lastfourwatched
Canadian Bacon (1995) I thought I was settling in for some silly fun and then I saw Michael Moore wrote and directed this… It’s probably best he does documentaries because if your satirical comedy has lectures about the Gulf of Tonkin and the invasion of Grenada, you’re probably not doing it right
Dead Snow (2009) Horny Norwegian college students vs. gold hungry Nazi zombies. 🧟 Even better than it sounds.
Apex (2026) If I have to see one more drone shot of a car on an isolated road in the forest I’m going to lose my ever loving mind. I know Netflix in particular is churning out these soulless and forgettable “thrillers” but it’s infecting other films as well. Make it stop. 😶 🔨 #filmsky
It seems that even JK Simmons can’t hold up a film where the music is arranged by his son, stars his daughter, is directed by his wife, and produced by his brother-in law. Perhaps this was where he should’ve used some outside connections but alas. One of the worst things I’ve seen in recent memory 🤮
The Rainbow Man (1949) The most misleading film poster perhaps ever, in that the scary “rainbows” in this film are basically cuts to color swatches. That said, this is an incoherent mishmash of drugs, bohemians, and every other fear Japanese society had in 1949. Of course I loved it! #filmsky
OR 🌍 📈 3.3m(2nd chance 200k) 👨✈️ 🇳🇴 🤖 ♻️-16 🫱 Sarr, LaCroix, 🤖 🇳🇴, Cherki, Munoz 🚪 🫲Brobbey, Wirtz, Salah, VVD, Andersen Let’s get crazy! -16 to bring in 5 City/Palace players. Figure even if they all blank, it’s 5 extra fixtures (hopefully!) so at worst it’s close to break even. Good luck all! 👍
1) Christine with the best acting performance of the week 2) ”You’re smart for your age” “I’m 18”=the ickiest cut to a sex scene ever 3) Don’t look for lost half-brothers 4) Found footage makers, you don’t need a glitchy, shaky cam ending. It’s really ok! #LetterboxdFriday #LastFourWatched #filmsky
Got my front 3 (and captain) playing in the early matches. Nobody tell them that one of them has already been transferred out and the other two are on the bench next week 🤫
Some good ones this week. Sobering look at American prisons via prisoners secret footage, a 4 foot frogman with a scepter that f*cks, John Carpenter chaos with a rocking synth score, and an uplifting high school football documentary #LetterboxdFriday #LastFourWatched #filmsky
OR 🌎 3.1m 📈(2nd chance 112k) Thiago 🇧🇷 👨✈️ ♻️ 1/1 Semenyo ➡️ Rogers Team value 💰 108.9 Team outlook ➡️ Dull I’m sure there’s some correlation with this unbroken string of green arrows and not taking hits. Just feels unnatural and boring. It will be corrected next week. Good luck all 👍
Looking at something like this for DGW36. Would be a -8 but also offset by having 3 extra fixtures. Could go extra 🌶️ and take a -12 with Sarr for Wilson as well
Gorilla: A Story (2026) I think I need David Attenborough to narrate every single piece of media or art possible. I recognize how exhausting this may be for him but the greater net good for humanity would be worth it
Good movie week. Undertone uses negative space to scare you, Belko with a cast of 80 (!) in a one locationer, Misery is as good as I remembered, and Watchers reminds me that greatness like Misery doesn’t exist without trash like this to compare it to #LetterboxdFriday #LastFourWatched #filmsky
