Grey-headed flying foxes are essentially one mobile colony from Meanjin to Kaurna Country, each year travelling and feeding on the nectar, pollen and rainforest fruit of the forests. Up and down the coast the forest blossoms and fruits and the flying foxes follow the resources
Most eucalypts only truly open their flowers and produce most of their nectar at night to attract the best pollinator. The fur of Grey-headed flying foxes grows in such a way that it holds pollen and transfers this genetic material across eucalypt forests with outstanding success
🦇 Dr Les Hall OAM spent a lifetime researching bats and maintained that east coast eucalypts and Grey-headed flying foxes co-evolved in a 50 million-year story of interspecies co-evolution
