5/ On source VS target • Does the translation relay the original intention, the intended feeling? • Are there misinterpretations or mistranslations? Fidelity and creativity are equally important. The art of localization resides in the subtle balance between transparency and transcreation 💫
4/ On implementation (a particularly important point, as it is specific and crucial to a videogame localization) • Has the loc been tested and implemented properly? • Is there any overlapping text or elements that don't fit in the interface?
3/ On style • Is the text fluid, readable? • Is the text adressing the player written in a way fitting the tone of the game? • Does each character have a distinct voice?
2/ On linguistics • Is the language good? • What about grammatical mistakes? • Typos? • Do the sentences make sense in the target language? • Are they devoid of Anglicisms?
1/ On subjectivity and your own preferences (you need to aknowledge them to be as fair as possible!)
First: congrats to the French localization team of @riotloc.bsky.social for winning the award with Kathy Rain 2! And cheers to the other finalists, Citizen Sleeper 2 & Split Fiction - their translations were brilliant as well.
Our Void leader @mittovac.bsky.social had the honor to be part of the jury for ATAA's French Game Localization Award. Here's a little essay on how to actually judge (i.e. appreciate) a game localization, and an insight as to why and how Kathy Rain 2's translation got the award 🏆🧵
Congratulations to the brilliant translators over at @riotloc.bsky.social for winning ATAA's French Video Game Localization Award with Kathy Rain 2 🏆✨ And lots of cheers to the other nominees for their remarkable work as well 🤍
"I'd much rather give them the sense of what the line means and let them work their magic to come up with an equivalent phrase in the destination language than limply translate a metaphor verbatim." A pleasure to see such a great writer's deep understanding of a translator's craft 🤍 #gameloc
A 𝙥𝙤𝙨𝙞𝙩𝙞𝙫𝙚 recap of this week's news for your weekend☀️ - A city in California permanently banned datacenters. - Amazon cancelled its AI-generated animated series. - Florida is suing ChatGPT producer OpenAI and its CEO, Sam Altman, saying he showed “Utter Disregard for the Risk to Human Life”. 🤞
🧈 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗯𝘂𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗱! 🧈 Allegedly derived from medieval market punishments where dishonest dairy vendors were forced to stand in the sun with their own butter on their heads; the melting butter publicly exposing their fraud. Often used to prevent someone from criticizing others.
Are you going to Game Camp this year? 👀 Our special envoy @laurelinewho.com will be there, feel free to find her on MeetToMatch to discuss everything localization 💫 We're always in search of new projects to work on, new devs to meet and new publishers to collaborate with 🤍 fromthevoid.net
In TAVRN'S TAKEDOWN, you'll fight a lot of colorful characters, including 💥Sister Ka-Pow💥 A great name made from an onomatopoeia... How does one translate such a nice sounding name, you ask? Here's how our fabulous Spanish team @bigbadwolframio.bsky.social & @narfius.bsky.social did it 🤍 ⬇️
Last month saw the release of 𝙈𝙖𝙜𝙞𝙣 💫 Branching plot, comic book aesthetic, full voice-over & deck building cards battler mechanics... An absolute delight. Cherry on top? You can enjoy this narrative adventure in Japanese, French & Korean thanks to your favorite Magins from the Void 🤍
How letting your translators brainstorm together brings out the best localization possible: an example. In The Bookwalker, said "Bookwalker" has the same translation in French, Spanish & Italian. Here's how our teams worked together on the most important name in @do-my-best.bsky.social's game 👇
Guess who's back with an indie gem recommendation 😏 It's actually @narfius.bsky.social who tested Block Witch, a narrative puzzle adventure with mechanics similar to those of the ice gym in Pokemons (iykyk) 🧊 Eager to play the final game! #SaturdayVoidRec💫

Today is #WorldPortugueseLanguageDay and we're here to celebrate! 🫏 This idiom describes a color you cannot describe. It may be a corrupted form of "Corro de burro quando foge" 👉 "I run away from a donkey when it flees". Over time, "corro" became "cor" (color)... Changing the expression entirely!

🥔 𝐒𝐚𝐦𝐞 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐩𝐨𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐨𝐞𝐬 🥔 Coming from old trattorie, this phrase was used on menus to avoid repeating the name of a dish available with various side options. They wrote "idem" (👉"same") but with potatoes, broccoli, spinach... Potatoes being the most common side dish, the idiom stuck with them!
We are 6 years old already. Happy birthday to us 💫 and cheers to all our talented linguists. You know who you are - and people know too, because your names are 𝒂𝒍𝒘𝒂𝒚𝒔 in the credits. You are the Void 🤍 #TranslatorsintheCredits
