ANOTHER IMPORTANT UPDATE: Super Girl has joined the group, and I found the Iron Man and Captain America toys I had on my desk at my fancy SLC job years ago. With this, I think the AMERICANA SHELF is complete for 2026! I'll keep it up until August 1st.

Funko pops of Super Man, Super Girl, Krypto, and Wonder Woman stand in front of patriotic plush rabbits and next to a fabric bird dressed as the statue of liberty.

Scratched up figures of Iron Man and Captain America stand next to a Funko Pop of Captain America and a plush baseball. They radiate patriotic energy.

A floating wall shelf is decorated with various toys and items that reflect the owner's feelings about their country. The display is very loud, sparkly, and audacious, covering everything from stereotypical barbecue food, to founding document replicas, and famous pop culture icons that may or may not actually have anything to do with the United States of America. One might wonder if there's some irony or perhaps satire in the presentation of the shelf-- it's certainly themed, but most items have been purposefully sourced through means that support the capitalist machine for consumerism.

Still, though, despite how silly it is for a Pringles can to have a 250th Birthday edition, there's a certain aesthetic quality inherent in Americana, stemming largely from its commitment to enthusiasm and lofty ideals that may not even be possible, exemplified by the beloved heroes of pop culture fame who are, in fact, fictitious.

Still, though, it is possible to have both heavy criticism AND hope for the future of this nation. It's likely the most American way to be.

My America shelf is ALMOST complete. I have a Super Girl coming next month, but IDK what to fill the rest of the spaces with. What do you think? Is it just the right amount of obnoxious???

A floating shelf full of classic USA paraphernalia. Three founding documents make up the backdrop along with a shiny garland made of red, white, and blue stars. On the shelf are decorations evocative of summer cookouts, baseball, flags, patriotic heroes, etc. The shelf front has another red, white, and blue garland, as well as a 3d printed sign in signature colors. Beneath are even more decorative items representing the US flag. To top it all off, the shelf has an animated LED lighting strip wrapped around it so that the bulbs fade between red, white, blue, and white, all day and all night.

A closer inspection of the left side of the America shelf reveals a plastic hot dog stand, a few wooden signs (Sizzle Time, Let's BBQ, a watermelon, a cheeseburger), a plush Pokemon Scorbunny eating a burger, a plush baseball with a face and feet, and two fabric birds dressed as a hamburger and French fries.

The middle of the shelf boasts the Pokemon eagle Braviary next to Fatal Fury's *American* hero, Terry Bogard. Next to him is a small acrylic stand of young Nai from Trigun dressed as a cowboy (by princess harumi!), next to two more fabric birds-- one dressed as Uncle Sam, the other a lady parade marcher. At the front is a series of Funko Pops: Captain America from Marvel, Snake Eyes from GI Joe, and Eagley from Peacemaker. The sign in front of them reads:

The right-hand side of the shelf hosts a sealed VHS copy of The Adventures of The American Rabbit, a vintage American Rabbit plush, the Star Spangled Xander rabbit plush, an action figure of Optimus Prime from Transformers, a fabric bird dressed as the Statue of Liberty, and two more Funk Pops: Superman and Wonder Woman, both from DC.

We finally went to the St Louis zoo last night for an event that turned out to be more about wine tasting, not animals, and neither of us drink??? So there was only about an hour of exhibits before they closed down most of it. Lame. BUT it was still a lot of fun, and we're soooo sore today.

We took Ringo to the park today and walked the 1.5 mile trail around the lake. I did pretty good for being 3 weeks out of surgery! Ringo was an angel. 💖
