He/him/ia. Economist convinced that business-as-usual is not the answer. Have data & evidence. Applied to be academic, but didn't know secret handshake. Paid my dues as consultant, then public servant. Now back in comfort zone of cricket and spreadsheets.
About to depart to big smoke to say hi to whānau🙏. Oh, and BTW, will be chatting with Jack Tame on Q&A tomorrow morning about The Fix ganeshnana.substack.com/p/the-fix. (Look/listen in if you're up after the game)😁.
Sadly, the picture now looks just as bleak ... As adding in other people (jobless + under-employed) indicates that our economy is just not delivering for all ... 😢
#nzpol Great to kōrero with Gerard re proposed Economic Governance Act. Have a listen🙏. www.facebook.com/share/v/1PDE...
#nzpol Paid parental leave - awesome🙂. Wonder what happened to pay equity🤔? I presume there's a policy promise and/or media release about to be dropped on us. I just can't wait ... 😠😡.
Yup. On the track we're heading, the Budget projection still has close to 200,000 on JSS in 2030. That's 4 years of microscopic progress. And, sadly, suspect it might be an 'optimistic' projection.
#nzpol 40 years of debt reduction, infln targeting, beneficiary bashing, and grow grow GDP growth, and what have we to show for it🤔? A sick and broken economy☹️. Time for the fix is long overdue🙏🏾. ganeshnana.substack.com/p/the-fix?r=...
Sad, but this is NOT looking after our people, nor is it investing in our future 😢😢😢.
#nzpol "Changes" to social housing are an outright entrenchment of poverty. From press release: "Rents for around 84,000 households will increase ... by about $31 per week ..."😡 Kicker is in bottom line "The maximum of TAS will be 'adjusted' ..." ... 'adjusted' is code for decrease😡?
#nzpol Can *all* political parties ... and leaders (business, community, and organisations) ... understand ... ... immigrants and/or foreigners are NOT a problem for Aotearoa.
In relation to the current orchestrated uprising and racist posts targeting particular communities and the generalised normalisation of xenophobic anti-migrant attitudes, I respond accordingly🙏🏾:
Oh ffs, seriously😠? Economists should NOT be providing bait for such misleading headlines. Truth is "we don't know", so stop narrative aimed at forcing RB to increase OCR. Alternative headline🙏🏾 Recession fears over fuel price shortage could mean May OCR cut another (not so top) economist says.
Take care all. Look after yourselves and each other🙏🏾. Kia kaha❤️.
You might like this chart 🤔 ... same NZ real GDP per capita each year (not change) ... average income/output/production per person for country has increased about 2.5 times over the past 65 years ... begs question ... where has the trickle down gone🤔?
And even worse ... the jobs that 'qualify' you for assistance are just not there ... Witness the jobless recovery ...
It is pertinent to note that those who are not in paid employment are not entitled to the extra In-Work Tax Credit announced today. Amongst others, this includes people on Jobseeker Support - currently numbering close to 200,000 - presumably deemed as not hard-working Kiwis😢.
Hoping someone can count ... MBIE says 23.3 days of petrol "on water". But also expect 28 days to arrive in next 2 weeks. Can't reconcile two sets of info? If 28 days arriving in next 2 weeks, then must have *>28* days already "on water" (not 23.3)? Doesn't make sense. Can someone clarify?
I hear the official unemployment rate has risen to 5.4%. Just don't mention the number of people. Or those who don't count as 'officially' jobless. Just glad we're back on track and getting the basics right.
"... in contrast to ownership conferring property rights to use - ownership confers trusteeship responsibilities to protect and preserve. Such kaitiaki ... a primary responsibility to protect and preserve ... being held in trust for communities and community. open.substack.com/pub/ganeshna...
Last time it rained on my birthday was when I was living in London - in 1991🤔.
Always (same comment for years in this survey) love how there are no "economic category risks" in the top 10. Always "someone else's" problem, just leave 'the economy' alone as it is functioning just fine thank you very much. 🤔☹️😠😡
An end-of-year message for all ganeshnana.substack.com/p/bye-bye-20.... And, yes, I will be back in 2026; and, no, next year I will NOT be keeping my powder dry🙏🏾✊🏾.
.... Ouch ... is suspect that 'other place' will be in turmoil ... 🤣.
For those believing we’re “turning the corner” … Number unemployed, other jobless, or wanting to work more hours all at 21-yr Sept high. Total 394,000 people - with families, whānau, mortgages/rent to pay, & food to put on table. No way we should accept this as feature of economy. 💔😢☹️😠😡
The direction where this administration wants to take our health service in its next term is clear. This should be central to the next election campaign. But if clickbait nonsense continues to prevail, the outcome is unlikely to be welcome by many💔. ganeshnana.substack.com/p/sucers-for...
