July 30, 2026 🌱 The tiniest prairie petunia, with a freshly shed flower.
July 29, 2026 🌱 White vervain — the more recently transplanted one. I tried to photograph it but couldn’t capture the cascading fountain of flowerstalks. Green-on-green is hard to see. Then I lucked into this shot, late at night, with the help of a neighbor’s car headlights.
July 28, 2025 🌱 Early sunflower in bloom. The size difference from a year ago is astounding.
July 27, 2026 🌱 A dried-up purple coneflower flower. The same plant also has a couple of fresh flowers and one partly dried flower.
July 26, 2026 🌱 I read that prairie petunias are avid self-seeders. But for a long while, all I had was the plants I planted myself and the sidewalk-crack seedling. Then out of nowhere, a bumper crop of volunteers arrived. I hope to see these lovelies all over in a few years.
July 25, 2026 🌱 So many Susans. Are they black-eyed? Brown-eyed? I don‘t know.
July 23, 2026 🌱 The Canada goldenrod is taller than me and preparing to bloom.
July 20, 2026 🌱 I’ve been sick, but I‘m feeling better and caught up enough to resume posting. And the culver’s root is still blooming.
Zoomed out it doesn’t look half as good. The individual plants are lovely, but I don’t have a mind for landscape design. But here’s a zoomed-out picture of a neighbor’s garden that I’m jelly of.
July 3, 2026 🌱 The culver’s root is blooming much more dramatically than last year.
July 1, 2026 🌱 A riot of hoary vervain flowers, plus some poppy mallow, and in the distance, threadleaf coreopsis.
June 30, 2026 🌱 Mushrooms on a log. Different log and bigger mushrooms.
June 29, 2026 🌱 The elder Virginia mountain mint in bloom. The recently transplanted Virginia mountain mint suffered a setback, of the something-chewed-through-it’s-stem variety, but it appears to be still alive and hopefully will rebound.
June 28, 2026 🌱 Bee balm or wild bergamot in bloom. I don’t think it was blooming yesterday, but I wouldn’t bet anything on that.
June 27, 2026 🌱 The mystery cucurbit appears to be a bush squash of some kind.
June 26, 2026 🌱 The hole in the threadleaf coreopsis has filled in, and it is in full bloom.
June 25, 2026 🌱 The columbine was done blooming… and then it wasn’t done.
June 24, 2026 🌱 Early sunflower is starting to bloom. There’s a couple open flowers and lots more on the way.
June 23, 2026 🌱 A double feature: ground cherry flowers two weeks ago [June 10, 2026] and unripe fruit today.
June 22, 2026 🌱 One of the new big-leaved asters. It’s settling in nicely.
June 19, 2026 🌱 It‘s a big dill. And a second big dill. There’s a tomato plant between them, but it’s completely obscured.
June 18, 2026 🌱 Purple prairie clover in bloom. Possibly the funkiest flowers in my entire garden 🥰
June 10, 2026 🌱 The jumpseed is looking less flattish. Also, I’m taking a break. The next post will be in about a week.
June 8, 2026 🌱 There was a major building fire upwind from us this morning. The ground is littered with these enormous pieces of ash.
